The Lincoln Railers Varsity volleyball team defeated Glenwood on Tuesday night at Roy S. Anderson. It took the Railers just two sets to defeat their Central State Eight rivals. Lincoln won 25-22 and 25-22.

Lily Holmes led the Railers with 10 kills.

Peyton Sasse had 9 kills. She is four kills shy of breaking the school record of 1,026 set by Emma Anderson.

Sasse was honored before the game for reaching 1,000 kills this past weekend in the Hampton Inn Tournament.

Lauren Tedrick had 25 assists.

The Varsity team improved to 10-6 on the season. Lincoln is 4-1 in the CS8.

Glenwood falls to 11-6 on the season. Glenwood is 1-3 in the CS8.

The Lincoln Freshman lost 15-6, 15-7 and 7-15.

The Lincoln JV won 25-18, 11-25 and 15-9.

Set one

Glenwood’s sensational sophomore, Alexis Neumann, slammed the first kill of the match and she was quickly followed by teammate Claire Knoedler, a freshman, with a kill and the 2-0 lead belonged to the Titans. Lily Holmes came to play against the Titans and she recorded the first kill for Lincoln. Neumann used another kill and an ace to drive the lead to 5-2 and it was evident early that she is a one-woman wrecking crew. Another sophomore, Morgan Wiezorek, was impressive with a kill and Glenwood was looking good early. Holmes added another kill of her own and she was keeping Lincoln in it early. After Peyton Sasse was impressive with a big kill of her own, Glenwood’s interim coach, Hannah Werth, said to her players on the court, “Yeah, she’s really good so we gotta put a block up!” An ace from Holmes tied the game 6-6. The two teams would tie each other four more times until Lincoln was able to squeeze in a 15-12 lead. The three-point lead was actually highlighted by a block on Neumann that really fired the Lincoln side up. Holmes was the most fired up as she knocked down another kill. Glenwood fought hard enough and caught some breaks while going on a 5-0 run to make the score 17-15.

Lincoln then took their turn coming back, starting with another kill into the block by Holmes. After the Titans watched a ball drop between them, Werth called a timeout with the score now 18-17 in Lincoln’s favor. Sasse was determined not to let the lead slip away and her kill kept the Railers on top, 21-18 the score. After a replay, which really was not a game changer, the Railers were able to cling to the lead. Sasse’s third kill of the set allowed Lincoln a 23-21 advantage. Jayden Behrends helped the Railers clinch the win with two tips from the middle that earned points and gave Lincoln the 25-22 win.

Set two

Behrends lit up the scoreboard first for Lincoln with a kill from the middle to start set two. Sasse and Holmes kept Lincoln on top with kills as well. After an ace by Holmes, the Railers lead was 6-4. The Titans tied the set on an ace and once again the two teams settled on trading points. Before the end of the set there would be seven more ties between the two teams. Holmes and Sasse always seemed to be in the middle of the action, both finding a rhythm and really putting the ball down. Holmes did some damage down the line to tie the set 13-13. It was pretty clear she wanted this CS8 win. Another nice kill by Holmes tied the set 14-14.

Sasse’s back-to-back kills brought the crowd alive and Lincoln had a two-point lead. Behrends was also swinging really well and her kill kept the Railers on top 19-17. After Makia Hassebrock’s block earned a point, there was a timeout called by Glenwood again. The closest the Titans would get after the timeout was 21-22 thanks to a pretty amazing hit by Memphis Barth from the middle. Barth is a sophomore and she joins five other underclassmen in the lineup. One senior and one junior also saw a lot of time on the court for Glenwood. But on Lincoln’s home court, Holmes was not about to let this one get away. It was a kill by Holmes that just landed inbounds and set two came to end with Lincoln on top again 25-22.

Lily Holmes, Peyton Sasse and Jayden Behrends each had great games for Lincoln.

Behrends put down six really good kills and had three key blocks.

Meanwhile, Sasse will try again Thursday night for the kills record as the team travels to Springfield High School.
