[September 16, 2024]   On the first official evening of Mt. Pulaski’s annual Fall Festival, the Logan County Farm Bureau Young Leaders (LCFBYL) hosted a kiddie tractor pull.

The temperature of the air was excellent, just a tad chilly with a hint of that fall feeling. Parents mingled and kids excitedly ran around as everyone awaited the beginning of the event.

Five individuals from the LCFBYL were responsible for pulling off this event. These individuals were Megan Opperman, Sam Opperman, Britainee Griffith, Abby Coers, and Clay Erwin.

A small child sized tractor could be seen between two sets of cones. The tractor was attached to a cart of sorts with wheels and a distance counter. The cart could be filled with weight. Speaking of weight, there were three weight classes. Kids in the lightweight class must have weighed between zero and forty-five pounds. Kids in the medium weight class must have weighed between forty-six and sixty-five pounds. Kids in the heavyweight class must have weighed between sixty-six and one hundred pounds. The higher the weight class, the more weight that was added to the cart from the beginning.

The kids sat on the tractor and pulled the cart as far as they could. Once the kids could go no farther, Sam Opperman would read off the weight and the judge would record the score, announcing it to the crowd. Kids pulled as hard as they could, with some making it part of the way and others making it all the way to the end. This was known as a “full pull” and occurred when a child made it forty feet. There was a total of six kids who achieved full pulls.

The results below show the kids who received first, second, and third in each of the three weight classes. The number after their name is the distance they pulled with the tractor. If there was more than one full pull in the weight class, there was a second pull with each kid that achieved the full pull, but with increased weight. In these cases, there will be a second number showing how far the child pulled with increased weight. The results for each of the classes are as follows:

• Lightweight Class:
o 1st: William McCubbin - Full pull - Full pull
o 2nd: Griffin Huff - Full pull - 37’
o 3rd: Wyatt McCubbin - 37.3’

• Medium Weight Class:
o 1st: Grady Calin - Full pull - 37.1’
o 2nd: Crew Applegate - Full pull - 35.1’
o 3rd: Aleigha Meyers - Full pull - 31.2’

• Heavyweight Class:
o 1st: Levi Renolds - Full pull
o 2nd: Ruby Tschantz - 36.8’
o 3rd: Hudson Schmid - 34.8’
