Obituary

Russell E. Funderburg of New Holland passed away on Sunday, September 15, 2024, at Springfield Memorial Hospital.

Russell was born October 28, 1937, the son of George and Fanny (Blakely) Funderburg.
He married the love of his life, Judith Harnacke, on March 17, 1956, in Fairfield. She preceded him in death on March 18, 2023.

Russell is survived by his children, Rochelle Funderburg of Champaign, Theresa (Russell) Morgan of Hartsburg, Tracey (Mike) Boyer of Middletown, and Stuart (Lisa) Funderburg of Springfield. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Andrew Morgan of St. Louis, Michelle Boyer of Lincoln, Katie (James Coleman) Funderburg of Chicago, Maddie (Nathan Gerowitz) Funderburg of Schaumburg, and Healy Funderburg of Springfield.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Judy; his parents; one sister, R. Christine Gobble; and his grandson, Sam Funderburg.

Russell graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in mechanical engineering. He was employed his entire career at Caterpillar, retiring in 1998 after 38 years of service.

Russell was actively involved in his community. He served on the New Holland - Middletown school board, as the Sheridan Township supervisor for many years, and as president of the Zion Lutheran church congregation in New Holland.

He was a devoted husband to his wife, Judy, the only girl he ever dated, and cared for her during her lengthy battle with Lupus. They were fortunate to celebrate 67 years of marriage together. We are thankful that they are once again united for eternity.

The family would like to express appreciation to Pam Garretson, who helped care for our parents for eight years and who loved and treated them like her own parents. We would also like to thank the staff at Springfield Memorial Hospital for the compassionate care Russell received while there.

Services for Russell will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, September 21, 2024, at Zion Lutheran Church in New Holland. Visitation will take place one hour prior from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the church. Burial will follow the service at Richmond Grove Cemetery in New Holland.

Memorials may be made in Russell’s name to Zion Lutheran Church of New Holland or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.
