[September 28, 2024]  LINCOLN - John Chesnut, 91, of Lincoln, formerly of New Holland, passed away on Thursday, September 26, 2024 with his family by his side.

Visitation:   9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at the First United Methodist Church in New Holland

Service:  11 a.m. Wednesday at the church

Obituary

John Chesnut, 91, of Lincoln, formerly of New Holland, passed away on Thursday, September 26, 2024 with his family by his side.

John was born on September 19, 1933, in Lincoln, the son of Lynn E. and Abigail (Woods) Chesnut. He married Adrienne Halleland on December 17, 1955, in Joliet, IL.

John is survived by his wife, Adrienne; daughters, Janet (Mike) Patrick, Diane (Mike) Whiteman, and Carol (Greg) Holderfield; seven grandchildren, Emilly Neale, Jill Runge, Katie Huhn, Amy Harms, Andy Whiteman, Griffin Holderfield, Grant Holderfield; four great-grandchildren; and sister, Marilyn (Glenn) Marten.

John loved farming. At eight years old you could find him tending the draft horses, hogs, chickens, dairy cows, and cattle. He graduated from New Holland High School and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign earning a Bachelor's degree in Agriculture.

John took pride in his military service. In 1956, he served his country in the US Navy on an amphibious command ship in the Pacific. Afterwards, he and Adrienne settled in New Holland and began farming.

He joined the Logan County Farmers Union, served as president, was a member of the Executive Board, and became a delegate at the National Farmers Union convention. In 1989, John and Adrienne received the Outstanding Farm Family of the year award.

His other memberships included the New Holland American Legion, Illinois Farm Bureau, New Holland Masonic Lodge, and Ansar Shrine. John served on many boards including the local Federal Land Bank, Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital, Sheridan Township, and New Holland Village.

John was an active member of the First United Methodist Church in New Holland, IL. He served on many committees and offered much of his time to help the church.

Services for John will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, October 2, 2024, at the First United Methodist Church in New Holland. Visitation will take place prior from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. also at the church. Burial will follow the services at Richmond Grove Cemetery in New Holland, where full military rites will be accorded.

Memorial donations may be made in John’s name to the First United Methodist Church of New Holland, Brains Together For A Cure, The National Brain Tumor Society, or charity of choice. Services have been entrusted to Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln, IL.
