Lincoln wins 10-8 slugfest over Athens

The Lincoln Railsplitters and the Athens Warriors combined for 27 hits and 18 runs on Monday night in Athens, with Lincoln winning the slugfest 10-8.

Lincoln had a handful of players with multi-hits as the team tallied 15 total hits.

Grey Gilbert and Morgan Sheley led the team at the plate.

Gilbert was 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a run scored. Gilbert also hit a solo home run in the top of the sixth inning.

Sheley was 3-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.

Laurynn Mayberry, Emma Hutchison, Regan Kutz and Kelsey Marten each had two hits.

Madisen Wurth had one hit for Lincoln.

The game had a few lead changes early with Athens taking a 2-0 lead in the first inning.

Lincoln was able to tie the game in the second inning after a walk and two errors. The Railsplitters went ahead on a fielder’s choice by Lily Holmes and stretched the lead to 4-2 after Sheley’s RBI single.

A three-run homer by the Warriors in the bottom of the third inning put the lead back in their pocket, 5-4 the score.

The Warriors added a solo shot in the fourth inning to extend the lead to 6-4.

Kutz and Marten each doubled in the fifth inning, scoring a run for Lincoln. The Railsplitters tied the game 6-6 on a catcher’s error.

Gilbert’s solo shot to right field put the Railsplitters in front for good in the sixth inning. After Sheley singled, Kutz drove her home on a double, putting Lincoln up 8-6.

Athens scored a run in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Hutchison, Wurth, Gilbert and Sheley all singled in the seventh inning, helping Lincoln to a 10-7 lead.

A lead-off home run in the bottom of the seventh inning proved to be the only run the Warriors could come up late in the game and Lincoln was able to capture a 10-8 win.

Madisen Wurth earned the win for Lincoln. She tossed four innings, allowing six hits and five runs. She walked one and struck out six.

Regan Kutz worked three innings in relief. She allowed six hits and three runs. Only two were earned. She struck out two batters.

Isabel Ingram was the losing pitcher for Athens. She worked seven innings, walking two and striking out four.

Ingram did have a solid day at the plate however. She was 2-for-4 at the plate with four runs driven in. She scored twice. Her two hits were a double and a home run.

Lincoln improved to 7-7 on the season.
