The Hilltoppers needed just four hits in the
inning to score the runs. The Hawks helped the Hilltoppers by
walking five batters in the inning and hitting one. Eric Cooper
led off the game with a single and he was able to advance to
second on a wild pitch. Chance Payne drove in the first run with
a double. Four consecutive walks and a hit batter put Mount
Pulaski up 4-0. Preston Cowan added an RBI single next. Cowan’s
at-bat was followed by a walk to Cooper that scored another run.
Liam Smith made contact for a sacrifice fly and the Hilltoppers
were up 7-0. Payne got a two-run single in his second at-bat in
the inning and the Mount Pulaski lead was 9-0.
The Hilltoppers added a run in the third inning on a single by
Carter Clark.
The Hawks plated five runs in the fifth inning and they got help
from the Mount Pulaski defense. The Hilltoppers committed four
errors in the inning. Fortunately, starter Jaeden Jackson was
able to escape the inning before the game got away. Jackson only
gave up two hits in the inning.
Chase Roberts pitched the final two innings in relief and he was
outstanding. Roberts gave up two hits and struck out five,
preserving the win for Mount Pulaski.
Jaeden Jackson earned the win for Mount Pulaski for his great
effort. He worked five innings, giving up four hits. He did not
allow a single earned run in his outing. Jackson struck out two
batters and walked one.
Mount Pulaski had ten hits versus the Hawks.
Chance Payne led the offense. He was 2-for-3 with three runs
batted in and a run scored.
Preston Cowan was also 2-for-3 with a run scored and a run
batted in.
Eric Cooper, Liam Smith, Carter Clark, Kolin Gibbs, Aaron Volle
and Luke Martin each had one hit.
Mount Pulaski improved to 11-2 on the season.
The Hilltoppers will play at Heyworth today at 4:30 p.m.
