Heyworth snaps Hilltoppers winning streak

[April 23, 2025]   The Hilltoppers 10-game winning streak came to an end on Tuesday as the Heyworth Hornets beat Mount Pulaski 4-2.
 
Mount Pulaski had a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth inning when the Hornets scored three times.

 

Luke Martin scored Mount Pulaski’s first run in the second inning after he doubled and was able to advance home on a ground ball by Preston Cowan that turned into an error by the shortstop.

Heyworth tied the game in the bottom of the third inning on an RBI single.

Carter Clark scored Mount Pulaski’s second run in the top of the fourth inning on Martin’s single to left.

An error and a walk allowed the Hornets to tie the game in the bottom of the fifth inning and Mount Pulaski’s woes continued when Heyworth took a 4-2 lead on two passed balls.

Mount Pulaski was retired quickly in the top of the sixth inning.

The Hilltoppers left two base runners stranded in the top of the seventh inning when the game ended on a strikeout.

The Hilltoppers were out hit 6-5 in the game.

Luke Martin was 2-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI for the Hilltoppers.

Liam Smith, Carter Clark and Preston Cowan each had a hit for Mount Pulaski.

Eric Cooper took the loss for Mount Pulaski. He allowed four runs on five hits. Only one run was earned. He walked two and struck out two.

Luke Martin pitched one and one-third innings, allowing one hit and one walk. He struck out two batters.

Liam Smith pitched to one batter in the seventh inning.

Mount Pulaski’s record falls to 11-3 on the season.

The Hilltoppers will play their first home game of the season on Thursday against Illini Bluffs. The first pitch will be at 4:30 p.m.
