On Thursday, July 31st, 4-H hosted
several beef shows. Two of these shows were the steer show and the
heifer show. The steer show was first, starting at 9:00 a.m. with
the heifer show following after a brief, ten-minute intermission.
Both shows were held in the Livestock Show Barn.
The judge for both shows was Ben
Lowers of Clinton. Lowers has extensive experience raising cattle.
In addition to his cattle knowledge, he is also Clinton’s Chief of
Police.
As each class was called, the
contestants guided their cows into the barn one-by-one. Some of the
animals were guided easily, while others had their own destinations
in mind. In several cases, cows got away from their owners, however,
people on the sidelines helped to get the animal under control
before anyone was hurt.
Both Reagan Tibbs and Heidi Zenor
were on the floor with the kids helping direct them where they
needed to go and assist them in any way they needed. Zenor often
would talk directly to the kids and was quick to jump in wherever
she was needed.
Each time a class came in, Lowers
took several minutes looking over the animals. He would walk around
each side of them, directing the contestants to move the animals
about so he could get a good look. Once he had made up his mind, he
would direct the kids to line up from first to last in their class.
He would talk about the animals before their owners walked them out
of the barn. Lowers was careful to mention both the good things
about each animal as well as what could be improved. He also made
sure not to diminish any of the animals or contestants, especially
those that did not win.
In one case, Lowers was extremely
impressed with one of the steers. This was an all black steer led by
Grayson Foran. Lower stated that “this is what show steers are made
of,” and stated that Foran “brought a fighter jet to a water balloon
fight.”
The new Logan County Fair Royalty
was on hand for the first part of the steer show. Vayda Farmer
(Little Miss Logan County), Courtney Cecil (Junior Miss Logan
County), and Julia Collins (Miss Logan County Fair Queen) handed out
ribbons and banners to those who won them.
Toward the end of both shows,
Lowers had nice things to say about the 4-H program, as well as the
kids who took part in the shows. Lowers called the kids in 4-H “the
cream of the crop” and the “leaders of tomorrow.” He also mentioned
that, while the number of contestants in Logan County is lower than
other counties, it is one of the most competitive counties in the
state.

In the end, Grayson Foran’s steer
won Grand Champion steer, while Palmer Foran’s steer won Reserve
Grand Champion. As for the heifer division, Reed Naughton received
Supreme Champion Female while Anna Parr received Reserve Supreme
Champion.
