Obituary
Gary Steven Funk, 72, of Sherman, IL,
passed away peacefully surrounded by love, on the
8th of August, 2025, in Springfield, IL. Born in
Lincoln, IL, on the 13th of January, 1953, to Buford
Stanley Funk and Elvera Moldenhauer Funk, Gary grew
into a man of great kindness, known for his creative
spirit and skilled hands.
Surviving him is his beloved wife of 44 years,
Sharon L. Otte Funk, whom he wed on the 2nd of May,
1981. They built a loving home and raised a family
together, which includes their daughter, Taylor L.
Funk of Sherman, IL; granddaughter, Maya, who was
the light of his recent years; and father of Maya,
Daniel Pienkowski. Gary also leaves behind his
sisters, Linda Franz of Lincoln, IL, and Rebecca
(Don) Cecil of Springfield, IL, along with several
cherished nieces, nephews, cousins, and his adored
cats, Yadi and Smoke. Preceding him in death were
his parents; his brother, Richard "Dick" Funk;
brother-in-law, Dwain Franz; nephew, Tyler Franz;
and many other beloved family members.
Gary, a graduate of Lincoln Community High School,
went on to further his education, receiving an
associate's degree from Benedictine University in
Springfield. His professional life was dedicated
deeply to public service, where he served the
Illinois Comptroller's office as a Public Service
Administrator for over 38 years. His commitment to
his community did not wane after retirement;
following in his brother Dick's footsteps, he opened
and maintained Funky's Trophies for 17 blessed
years, providing joyful recognition to countless
individuals.
Beyond his work, Gary contributed to the Sherman
Area Chamber of Commerce, showing that his love for
the community was both personal and professional. He
was of the Lutheran faith and found joy in the
simpler pleasures of life. Gary was an avid fan of
the St. Louis Cardinals, and his enjoyment of sports
extended into spirited sessions of fantasy football
with friends and cheering for the Carolina Panthers.
Garys legacy of warmth, generosity, and devotion
will forever be etched in the hearts of those who
were fortunate enough to cross paths with him. His
was a life well-lived and a story well-loved. |
