Obituary
Perry Kent Harris, affectionately
known as "Paint Your Wagon," passed away on August
22, 2025, at Vermillion Valley Resort in California.
He was 68 years old.
Born on July 19, 1957, in Lincoln, Illinois, Perry
led a life filled with adventure, service, and a
deep appreciation for the natural world. His path
took him from the Midwest to the scenic wilderness
of California, where he found both purpose and
peace.
Perry served honorably in the United States Army and
was a distinguished member of the U.S. Army
Parachute Team. His military service reflected his
courage and dedication— qualities that remained
constant throughout his life.
In later years, Perry found fulfillment working as a
ferry boat captain at Vermillion Valley Resort.
There, he transported hikers to and from the PCT and
into VVR—a role that perfectly combined his love for
nature with his generous spirit. The resort became
more than just a workplace; it was a place of deep
personal meaning. It is fitting that he spent his
final moments in a setting he cherished so dearly.
Perry is lovingly remembered by his son Shane
Harris, sisters Dawn Harris, Shelly Turner, and
Crystal Brewer; his brother Scott Turner; and his
nieces and nephews: Crystal Laine, Dani, JJ, Conner,
Kaila, Amber, Tristen and Tessika
He was preceded in death by his mother Mary Kirk
Turner; father Dwight Estel Turner; and infant
brother Howard Kirk.
Perry’s legacy endures through those who knew
him—through stories shared beneath open skies and
memories made along forest trails. May his memory
bring comfort to all who were fortunate enough to
cross paths with him.
His time with us was far too brief, but the lessons
he taught about living fully will forever remain. |
