Elkhart Historical Society presents "The Tastes and Tunes of Ireland" featuring Wild Columbine on March 21st

[February 28, 2025]  The Elkhart Historical Society has for many years celebrated the Irish heritage that exists in our surrounding area and are inviting you to join us at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, March 21, 2025, at the Elkhart Christian Church’s Fellowship Center, at 206 South Gillett St., in Elkhart, Illinois, for “The Taste and Tunes of Ireland.” Wild Columbine, a trio of musicians featuring Sally McDaniel-Smith (flutes and whistles), Megan Turner (violin), and William Furry (guitar, concertina, mandolin and percussion), will perform a repertoire of traditional Irish, Scottish, and English music of the 18th and 19th centuries. For this program the band will play mostly Irish reels, jigs, airs, and polkas, and sing a few songs from traditional sources.

Wild Columbine has been performing as a band for 10 years, but the members' collective experience totals more than nine decades. Furry, a five-generation native of Springfield and now a resident of Petersburg, is the executive director of the Illinois State Historical Society. McDaniels-Smith is a sought-after soloist and frequent "pit" player for musical theater productions. Megan Thornberry's evolution as an artist has been enhanced by her work with community orchestras, the opera, and her passion for traditional music.

This spring and summer you can hear the band play in Macomb, Edwardsville, Decatur, Charleston, Hillsboro, and Springfield.

The “Taste”, will be traditional corn beef or pot roast, accompanied by cabbage, red potatoes, carrots, and onions, with a roll and butter, and warm bread pudding with a delectable sauce or sherbert for dessert.
