			 The
public is invited to attend this event and see amazing names of
scouts who are now pillars in Logan County and other communities
living up to their motto “BE PREPARED” and becoming leaders early in
			life.

Outreach Ministry of the church has worked with Jason Maxheimer and
his fellow scout leaders in acquiring the names of scouts during
their time at St. John and/or First United Methodist Church. A
display will be set up in Fellowship Hall for viewing along with a
social hour for fellowship and conversation with the scouts at their
displays of past history along with some of their crafts. There is
also the wall highlighting some honors and trophies won by various
			scouts.

The scouts have been visible working throughout Lincoln and Logan Co
			– working the grandstand at Logan Co Fair for Toys for Tots & later
helping distribute them. You’ll see them working at the Community
Garden, Pumpkin Smash, moving books in Library and working with
Books in Park, They can’t vote but help with election nights and
help the local Woman’s Club with food pantry.

Many get their hands dirty working on the trails at Kickapoo Park or
helping a group coming into Lincoln to do projects/repairs etc.
Perhaps others have seen them doing other community projects such as
			electronic recycling or document shredding.

BOY SCOUT HISTORY/ST. JOHN UNITED CHURH OF CHRIST

The value of character training of youth in the Boy Scouts of
America had early recognition in St. John Church. A Boy Scout Troop
was organized in 1912, only two years after national organization
was founded. The second troop in central Illinois was identified as
Troop 6. Walter Niebuhr was first scoutmaster (1912-1915) First
scouts were: Gerhold Balster, Harry Brelsford, Raymond Danner,
Arthur Gimbel, George Gimbel, Clarence Grauer, Raymond Klemm,
Raymond Lenhardt, Graydon Marti, Armin Rembe, Roland Rembe & Ralph
Wilmert. When camping along Sugar Creek on property of Herman Meyer
in Scoutmaster’s absence his mother, Mrs. Gustav Niebuhr would
direct the activities. Meals were prepared by Mrs. Elizabeth Goebel.
Boys had given an ice cream social to raise funds to finance the
			trip.

Arthur A. Gimbel assumed leadership as scoutmaster (1915-1923 -and
remained a supporter until his death) All camps were held at Lincoln
Chautauqua. Fred W. Kochendorfer became scoutmaster (1923-1931 and
1933-1936) Frederick D. Tuemmier (1931-1933) In 1936 the boys were
transferred to other troops and Troop 6 was discontinued for many
years. Under Fred Kochendorfer many awards were earned, and the
greatest number of active scouts were twenty-eight. (excerpts from
St. John 100th Anniversary Book 1960) Scoutmaster 1988 was Ron
Staubly. Soon after Troop 6 disbanded and until 2019 the troop met
at First United Methodist Church. In 2019 Troop 1102 came to S t.
John UCC with Scoutmaster Jason Maxheimer since 2017 leading them.
