Sun Safety in Central Illinois: Protect Your Skin This Summer

[July 16, 2025]  As summer temperatures rise across Central Illinois, local health officials are urging residents to take precautions against the dangers of sun exposure. Whether you're working outdoors, attending festivals, or enjoying time at the lake, protecting your skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays is essential.

“Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States, but it's also one of the most preventable,” said Kara Davis, Director of Nursing of the Logan County Department of Public Health. “With a few simple habits, we can significantly reduce our risk.”

Top Sun Safety Tips:

• Use Sunscreen Daily: Apply broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30, even on cloudy days. Reapply every two hours and after swimming or sweating.

• Wear Protective Clothing: Long sleeves, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses can provide an extra layer of defense.

• Seek Shade: Avoid direct sunlight between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are strongest.

• Stay Hydrated: Sun exposure increases the risk of dehydration, especially for children, seniors, and outdoor workers.

• Protect Children Early: Children’s skin is more sensitive to UV rays. Teach them sun-safe habits early.

Central Illinois often experiences high UV index levels in the summer months. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), even a few serious sunburns can increase your child’s risk of skin cancer later in life.
