Bridge project near Elkhart to
begin March 11, 2025
[March 07, 2025]
Beginning March 11th, construction will begin
on a bridge northeast of Elkhart. The bridge carries 1039th Avenue
over a tributary to Lake Fork Ditch and is located about 1 mile
north of 700th Street. The road will be closed to traffic during
construction, which will last until late April.
The existing bridge is 36 feet long and was built in 1959. The
bridge was constructed with a concrete deck on timber pilings which
was a common practice at the time. Those timber pilings have since
rotted and are in poor condition. The existing bridge will be
completely removed, and a new concrete box culvert will be
constructed.
The project was awarded to Otto Baum Company, Inc. located in
Morton, Illinois. The low bid on the project was $447,000. State
bridge funds will be used for 80% of the cost. Logan County and
Elkhart Township will use local property tax funds to split the
remaining 20% local share.
