Lady Railers win season opener 5-4 over Normal Community

[March 19, 2025]   The Lincoln Railers softball team earned their first win of the season on Monday afternoon at Schweitzer Field.

The home opener was exciting, with Regan Kutz slugging a three-run homer early in the game and Norah Block coming up with the game-winning hit in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the 5-4 win over Normal Community.

Lincoln was trailing 2-0 in the third inning when Kutz gave the Railers the lead with one swing of the bat. Kutz homered to left field, driving in both Maci Eskra and Grey Gilbert to put Lincoln up 3-2.

Normal Community went ahead 4-3 in the top of the sixth inning.

Laurynn Mayberry slugged a one-out double in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Lincoln hope. With two outs, Mayberry was standing on second base when Kate Farnam stepped to the plate. Farnam singled to left on a 2-2 count, allowing Mayberry to score the tying run. This set the stage for Block to be the hero and she did not disappoint. With a 2-2 count, she sent the ball to left field for a double and Farnam scored the game-winner.

Lincoln’s home opener was a 5-4 victory over Normal Community. What a great day and a great way to start the season!

Madisen Wurth pitched in relief for Lincoln and she earned the win. Wurth worked four and one-third innings. She struck out three batters and walked one. She did allow four hits and two runs.

Regan Kutz started the game for Lincoln. She worked two and two-thirds innings. She struck out one batter and walked one. She gave up three hits and two runs.

The Railers had six hits in the game, with Block recording two hits.

Kate Farnam, Grey Gilbert, Regan Kutz and Laurynn Mayberry each had one hit.

The key was putting the hits together and Lincoln did just that to start the season with a win.

Lincoln will play at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday against PORTA/Ashland-Chandlerville in Petersburg.
