Annual tradition continues as local scouts enjoy another successful BBQ fundraiser

[March 16, 2025]    Sunday, March 16th was the annual Boy Scout Troop 1102 Pulled Pork BBQ fundraiser at the Lincoln Knights of Columbus.

It was a great day to stay tucked inside enjoying a hot meal, though temperatures all week had been unseasonably warm, Sunday was considerably colder with snow falling in the early morning. While the snow did not last long, the cool temperatures and grayish skies persisted for the greater part of the day.

However, inside the Knights Hall it was warm and inviting, with the smells of good food, and the laughter of good friends and family enjoying a meal while supporting the local scouts.

The meal consisted of pulled pork that had been rubbed down on Wednesday then taken to the smokers by scouts and scout leaders. Accompanying the meat was potato salad, cole slaw, baked beans and a wonderful selection of desserts.

Guests could dine in or take out scrumptious meals for a mere $10 each.

Scout leader Mark Mathon talked about the price of the meal, as it was noted that it is one of the best priced fundraisers in the community. He said that the scouts had received overwhelming support from the community over the years. While the scouts knew there was a good possibility they could have raised the prices this year, they did the math and decided that they wanted to hold the line at least one more year. He noted that it has been three years since the scouts raised their ticket price, and they were all happy to be able to hold the line as a show of appreciation for the community that has supported them so well over the years.

Leader Jason Maxheimer said it had been a great day, and that the steady flow of traffic into the dining room as well as the takeout room was a gratifying. He echoed Mathon saying the scouts certainly appreciated the support of the community.

Though the date was March 16th, the eve of St. Patrick’s Day, there was a respectable show of green in the room, including one young man, dressed in his Sunday best with a mint green shirt to show his loyalty to the St. Patty observance.

In addition to the leaders, there were plenty of boy scouts working the room on Sunday. Scouts served up the meals, cleared and cleaned tables, helped with beverages, and kept an eye on the dessert tables. There were also scouts at the door welcoming guests upon arrival and thanking them when they departed happily and full of delicious pork.

The money raised by the BBQ meal helps to fund supplies and materials for scouts who might need assistance and also goes toward scout activities. It is the primary fundraiser for Troop 1102.
