Liam Smith also had a great game, going 2-for-3
with three runs scored and an RBI.
Payne’s first inning double scored Smith with the first run of
the game.
Payne drove in two more runs in the bottom of the second inning
with another double.
Mount Pulaski plated six runs in the third inning, all with two
outs.
Two walks and a single by Tyler Cross loaded the bases for
Smith. Smith drew a walk, driving in a run and making the score
4-0. Payne followed with his third double of the game, a
base-clearing extra-base hit that made the score 7-0. Aaron
Volle added an RBI single and after Payne cruised home on a wild
pitch, the Hilltoppers were up 9-0.
The Hilltoppers loaded the bases to start the fourth inning, but
only one run made it home after a double play and a pop out to
second.
Carter Clark picked up the win for the Hilltoppers. He worked
three innings, allowing two hits, two walks and striking out
one.
Eric Cooper worked one inning, allowing one hit and striking out
two batters.
Aaron Volle worked one inning, allowing one walk and recording
one strikeout.
Mount Pulaski improves their record to 16-3 on the season.
The Hilltoppers will host the Springfield Senators on Tuesday at
4:30 p.m.
