Carter Clark’s two-run single did the most
damage in the first inning. Chance Payne also drove in a run on
a ground out as Mount Pulaski was off to a 3-0 lead.
The Hilltoppers made it 6-0 in the top of the second inning.
Tyler Cross started the second inning with a double and he
scored on a single by Kolin Gibbs. After Eric Cooper singled,
Liam Smith lifted a sacrifice fly to left to score Austin
Kretzinger. Kretzinger entered the game to pinch run for Gibbs
and he also stole a base. The next batter, Chance Payne, drove
in another run on a sacrifice fly and Mount Pulaski was up 6-0.
Chase Roberts was on the mound for Mount Pulaski and he was
dealing aces, striking out five batters through two innings. He
struck out the side in order in the bottom of the second inning.
The Hilltoppers added two runs in the top of the fourth inning
when Luke Martin doubled in a run and Aaron Volle batted in a
run on a ground ball to third base.
Mount Pulaski was looking to get the game over quickly when they
scored four times in the top of the fifth inning. Preston Cowan
started the inning with a base hit. After Cross was hit by a
pitch, Gibbs walked to load the bases. Cooper was out on an
infield fly but Smith picked him up with a single to score one
run. Payne followed suit with a hit to drive in a run as well.
Then it was Martin with a single to drive in two runs as the
Hilltoppers reached what would be the final score, 12-0.
Preston Cowan tossed a scoreless bottom of the fifth inning,
striking out one batter and allowing one hit.
Chase Roberts earned the win for Mount Pulaski. He worked four
innings, allowing four hits and one walk. Roberts struck out
seven batters.
Mount Pulaski had 12 hits versus Tri-City.
Luke Martin’s three hits led the team.
Chance Payne had another solid game, going 2-for-3 with three
RBIs and a run scored.
Cooper, Smith, Volle, Clark, Cowan, Cross and Gibbs each had one
hit.
Aaron Volle led the team with three stolen bases and Luke Martin
swiped two bases.
The Hilltoppers improved to 18-4 on the season.
Mount Pulaski will host the Havana Ducks today at 4:30 p.m. for
