Young’s three-run homer was the difference on
the scoreboard as Monticello blanked Mount Pulaski 3-0 in the
last regular season game before regionals.
Young, who signed with the University of Illinois last fall to
play baseball, played right field on Monday night versus the
Hilltoppers and he threw two runners out at home to preserve the
shutout. Young will pitch for the Illinois baseball team. The
senior was also the quarterback for the State runner-up Sages
football team and he played basketball.
Clark pitched a gem of a ballgame, only allowing three hits over
five innings. He walked one and struck out three. Incidentally
his first strikeout of the game was of Ike Young. Clark, a
sophomore, hit the two batters before Young’s home run to left
field.
Jaeden Jackson pitched a scoreless inning in relief for Mount
Pulaski.
Mount Pulaski had three hits in the game, one each by Chance
Payne, Luke Martin and Clark.
Gatsby Grant was the winning pitcher for Monticello.
Mount Pulaski (20-6) will play Villa Grove today at 4:30 p.m. in
the Tuscola Class 1A Regional. Mount Pulaski is a no. 2 seed.
Monticello (26-5) is the no. 1 seed in the Maroa-Forsyth Class
2A Regional.
