LCHS girls headed to State in Track and Field

[May 23, 2025]

Senior Mallory Short leads a group of LCHS athletes to the IHSA Class 2A Girls State Track and Field Championships at Eastern Illinois University in Charleston this weekend.

Short is making her fourth consecutive trip to State.

Short is joined in the 4x400m relay by Kyli Lund, Grace Schneider and Bailey Tungate. These girls will run in the first heat today at 1:35 p.m.

Lund and Schneider are making their third trip to State while this is Tungate’s second trip to State. Tungate is a sophomore who competed in the high jump last year at EIU. Tungate basically takes Becca Heitzig’s spot on the relay team from last year. So experience is definitely on their side. Natalie Geary is the alternate for the relay team.

The girls competed at the IHSA Class 2A TRG Sectional at Pontiac last Wednesday with the 4x400m relay team qualifying with a PR of 4:11.01.

Short qualified for the 400m with an impressive PR of 58.54. Short will run in the fourth heat today at approximately 12:35 p.m.

Brenley Bruns will be competing in the high jump today around 9:30 a.m. She finished in second place in the sectionals with a jump of 1.54m (5’ 0.5”). Bruns is a junior.

Adalyn Varner will be throwing the discus today at 11:00 a.m. She qualified for State with a throw of 34.93m (114’ 7”). Varner is a sophomore.

The Prelims get underway today with the finals scheduled for Saturday.

Congratulations and good luck today, Railsplitters!
