Obituary
David Hilyard Hoff,
65, of Taylorville, Illinois, formerly of Mason
City, passed away on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at
Springfield Memorial Hospital under hospice care. He
was born May 17, 1961, in Springfield, Illinois, to
Kenneth R. and Margaret A. (Hilyard) Hoff.
David and Cathy shared 10 wonderful years together,
the last five as husband and wife. They were married
on May 22, 2021, in Gulf Shores, Alabama.
He is survived by his loving wife, Cathy Hoff of
Taylorville; his father, Kenneth Hoff of Mason City;
his two sons, Joshua and Christopher; and his
grandson, Oliver.
He is also survived by his bonus children, Wes
(Jenna) Matthews of Taylorville and Jessica Avera of
Chatham; and his bonus grandchildren, Sophia, Karter,
Maddox, and Axel, who lovingly called him “Papa
Dave.”
David is also survived by his siblings, William
(Denise) Hoff of Carlinville, Illinois; Kenneth D.
(Diana) Hoff of Crestwood, Kentucky; Susan (Mike)
Damm of Mason City; and Lisa (Bob) Hudgins of Mason
City, many nieces and nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Margaret
Hoff; his sister-in-law Linda Dunseth and
brother-in-law Jim Dressen; and his dog of ten
years, Barkley.
David graduated from Easton High School and attended
Lincoln Land Community College. He retired from
Logan Correctional Center and later worked as a
groundskeeper at Lincoln College.
David was of the Lutheran faith.
An avid Minnesota Vikings fan, David enjoyed
cheering on his favorite team, woodworking, camping,
and lending a helping hand on the family farm. He
loved his coffee, and those who knew him knew that
his trusty thermos was never far from his side. He
had a special appreciation for the simple pleasures
in life and was always happiest when spending time
with family and friends. His best buddy was his
beloved dog, Snoop, who was a faithful companion and
brought David great joy.
David was known for
his quick wit, keen sense of humor, and ability to
bring laughter to those around him. He was a
genuine, down-to-earth man who valued friendship and
maintained many lifelong friendships throughout the
years. |

Whether sharing a story,
offering a helping hand, enjoying a camping trip, or sharing
a good laugh, David had a way of making those around him
feel welcome.
Above all, David will be
remembered for the friendships he treasured, the laughter he
shared, and the many memories he leaves behind. He will be
deeply missed by his family, friends, Snoop, and all who had
the pleasure of knowing him.
