2018 Logan County Fair Lincoln Daily News July 29 - August 5, 2018 Page 251 A year of hard work comes to an end at the 4-H Livestock Auction Sunday, August 5, 2018 T his year’s auction featured a sprinkling of art items shown at the fair on Monday. The auction was primarily and quite heavily populated with livestock entries. From rabbits to poults to pigs, sheep and cattle, 4-H youngsters paraded their animals around the sale ring one last time, hoping to garner healthy bids from the audience. The 4-H auction is an important part of the fair for the kids. The money bid on an animal goes to the kid, and that helps defray some of the cost of raising and showing the animal. For 4-H showmen, the cost of having an animal can get quite hefty. Feed costs these days are high, but that is far from all that is involved. To qualify an animal for 4-H shows there are health checks that involve paying for veterinarian services. There is also the time and effort of the young person showing the animal. Raising an animal and preparing for a show is a long-term commitment for the kids, and reaping a healthy pay check is just rewards for all that effort. Congratulations to each one who made a sale, and thanks to each individual, business or group of businesses who made a purchase. The support of the community for the Logan County 4-H program is what will help keep the program going strong for years to come. [Nila Smith]
