Under his leadership, the congregation grew along with its need for a larger edifice. He spearheaded a multi- year building project and in 1997 built a new edifice for his congregants. Shelton was employed by the State of Illinois, Department of Human Resources, as an Assistant Deputy Director for 26 years before God lead him to full-time ministry. Before that, he worked as a welder, a postal worker and Director of the Boys and Girls Club in Springfield, IL, his hometown. He is proud to be a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a lifelong Republican. While preaching God’s word, Rev. Shelton felt it necessary to step outside of the walls of his church and serve his community as well. He holds the title of many firsts in the city of Lincoln. He was the first Black American appointed to Lincoln’s Planning Commission as a board member and was then elected to the position of Alderman (Ward 4) from 2001-2005, Chairman of the board for the 911 Commission, a founding board member of the YMCA, Chairman of the family selection committee for Habitat for Humanity, co-founder of the Kinzie/MLK Scholarship Breakfast, a former Trustee for Lincoln College and a member and past president of the Lincoln Area Ministerial Alliance (LAMA). He only agreed to serve on committees that allowed him to be of service to all of the members of his community. G lenn Shelton has been selected as one of this year’s Hometown Heroes by the Lincoln Daily News. Reverend Glenn Shelton is the former pastor of Second Baptist Church at 1728 Tremont in Lincoln, IL.
