2021 Hometown HEROES Magazine LINCOLN DAILY NEWS May 27, 2021 Page 7 W hen LDN made the decision to include Joe Schaler as one of its Hometown Heroes for 2021, it was met with some mild opposition, from Schaler himself. While many in Logan County perceive Schaler as the face of, and the voice for veterans in our community, he sees himself as just one spoke in a very large wheel with so many others involved they can’t all be named from memory. While Schaler may be a common factor in many local organizations that assist local veterans, he doesn’t see himself as a hub. For him the hub is the veteran in need, the one who is struggling to deal with life after the military and needs to be surrounded by understanding supportive people. AMarine veteran and Purple Heart recipient, Schaler served in the late 60’s and saw combat in Vietnam.
