Virgil Patton

Virgil James Patton, 83, of Lincoln died at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 5, 2001, at St. Clara’s Manor in Lincoln.

Graveside services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at Walker’s Grove Cemetery, Easton, with Pastor Don Hoover officiating.

There will be no visitation.

Patton was a union musician in a band and played at many locations. He also worked for JC Construction of Des Moines, Iowa.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Louise Adams

Louise Steiling Adams, 82, of Atlanta died at 6:25 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at the Christian Nursing Home in Lincoln.

Her funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at the Atlanta Christian Church, with David Harmon officiating.

Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Waynesville.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the church.

Quiram Funeral Home, Atlanta, is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Adams worked several years as a cook for the Olympia School District.

She was born Nov. 7, 1919, at Waynesville to Holton and Emma Meachum Leever. She married John C. Steiling on Feb. 16, 1942, in Louisiana, Mo. He died Sept. 17, 1974. She married Leo W. Adams on Sept. 12, 1980, in Atlanta. He died May 11, 1988.

Surviving are two sons, Donald (and Susie) Steiling of Atlanta and Richard (and Christine) Steiling of Thiensville, Wis.; one daughter, Diana (and Grant) Breakville of Normal; five grandchildren; one great-grandson; eight stepgrandchildren; 16 step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Nelson Leever of Riverside, Calif., and Ted Leever of Lincoln; one sister, Marjorie Hickey of Decatur; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers.

She was a member of the Atlanta Christian Church and served as janitor there for 13 years. She was a former member of the Atlanta Woman’s Club.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Atlanta Christian Church or to the Christian Nursing Home in Lincoln.


Claude ‘Doc’ Renner

Claude E. "Doc" Renner, 81, of Atlanta died at 11:44 p.m. Monday, Dec. 3, 2001, at OSF St. Joseph Medical Center in Bloomington.

His funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at the Atlanta United Methodist Church, with the Rev. David Venter officiating.

Burial, with military rites accorded by the Atlanta American Legion Post 341, will be in Atlanta Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Quiram Funeral Home, Atlanta, with Masonic rites at 8 p.m.

Renner worked as a heavy equipment operator for R.A. Cullinan and Son, Tremont. He retired in 1991.

He served in the Army Air Corps in World War II.

He was born May 20, 1920, at Mount Pulaski to Guy and Louise Morris Renner. He married Lucille Lamb in 1942.

Surviving are two daughters, Kathy Mountjoy of Bloomington and Susan (and Dave) Chinowth of Atlanta; five grandchildren, Meghan, Sean and Erin Mountjoy and Nick and Ashley Chinowth; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

He was a member of Operating Engineers Local 965, the Atlanta American Legion, VFW and 40 et 8. He was a member and Past Master of the Atlanta Masonic Lodge 165 and served as secretary from 1971 to 1985. He also was a member of the Lincoln York Rite Bodies, Order of Eastern Star and White Shrine. He was an honorary member of Minier Comet Lodge 641, Clinton DeWitt Lodge 84, Mount Pulaski Lodge 87 and Delavan Lodge 156. He was also a member of the Atlanta United Methodist Church.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Atlanta Public Library and Museum or to the Atlanta Rescue Squad.

Herschel Thompson Sr.

Herschel Berten Thompson Sr., 80, of Lincoln died at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at the Christian Village in Lincoln.

His funeral will be at 6 p.m. Friday, Dec. 7, at Lincoln Christian Church, with Tom Gerdts officiating.

Burial will be in Orio Cemetery, rural Allendale.

Visitation will be from 3:30 to 6 p.m. Friday at Lincoln Christian Church and from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at Little Prairie Christian Church in Albion.

Arrangements are being handled by Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Thompson was a Christian church minister and retired from Lincoln Christian College maintenance and custodial departments.

He was born July 14, 1921, in rural Bridgeport to James Madison and Lulu Maud Bass Thompson. He married Juliett (Judy) Pierson on March 10, 1941, in rural St. Francisville.

Surviving Thompson are his wife, of Lincoln; three sons, Jimmie Lewis (and Barbara) Thompson of Ellery, Sharon Lee (and Jane) Thompson of Lincoln and Herschel Berten Thompson Jr. of Springfield; seven grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Dorothy Hulchel of Olney.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, three sisters and one son.

He was a member of Lincoln Christian Church and the Christian Corner Class of the church.

He was a graduate of Lincoln Bible Institute.

Memorials may be made to Lincoln Christian Church or Lincoln Christian College.

Johanna Montgomery

Johanna Montgomery, 94, of Lincoln died at 3:25 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 4, 2001, at Christian Village Nursing Home in Lincoln.

Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 8, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln, with Tom Gerdts officiating.

Burial will be in Irish Grove Cemetery, Middletown.

Visitation will be one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Mrs. Montgomery was a retired cook. She had worked at Lincoln Christian Village.

She was born July 10, 1907, in Hamborn, Germany, to Carl and Hermina Fichtner Weber. She married Haskell Eugene Montgomery on Dec. 12, 1945, in Lincoln. He died in 1971.

Surviving are one son, Richard Montgomery of St. Louis, Mo.; two grandsons, Philip (and Allison) Montgomery of Conway, Ark., and Jeffrey Montgomery of Pleasant Plains; and one great-grandson, Andrew Montgomery of Conway, Ark.

She was also preceded in death by one brother. She was the last of her immediate family.

She was a member of Lincoln Christian Church and an active life member of Eastern Star.

Memorials may be made to the Christian Village Nursing Home in Lincoln.
