Utilitarian: A winning word for one

The annual Logan County Spelling Bee was Wednesday, Feb. 21, at the Logan County Courthouse. The spelling bee is sponsored jointly by the Regional Office of Education and the Pantagraph. There were 13 school representatives involved in this year’s bee, which went 17 rounds and consisted of 84 words.

Alison Kessinger, daughter of Brian and Colleen Kessinger, was this year’s winner. Alison is in the seventh grade and represented Chester-East Lincoln Elementary School. She won by correctly spelling the word "utilitarian."

Emily Reiners from West Lincoln-Broadwell Elementary was in second place and Cara Barrick from Carroll Catholic School was third.

Mary McKeeth from the Bloomington Public Library was the pronouncer.

A Pantagraph representative, Ellen Colbeck-Taylor, presented a trophy to the winner, and George D. Janet, regional superintendent of schools, presented a new dictionary to each of the top three placers.

These three young ladies will represent Logan County at the Pantagraph Spelling Bee March 24 at Westbrook Auditorium in Pressor Hall on the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington.

Members of LCHS speech team place at state

Lincoln Community High School's speech team captains, Allison Leonard and Kyle Pepperell, advanced Saturday to the final rounds of the Illinois High School Association 2001 State Individual Events speech contest. Advancing as sectional champions in dramatic duet acting, the pair placed sixth in the state at the final competition in Pekin with their performance of "Echoes," a story that traces the interaction of two individuals whose lives cross paths when they are patients in a mental institution.

Leonard also advanced to the final rounds in the prose division. Her performance of "Clear Glass Marbles," a young girl's account of her mother's death, earned her seventh place in Illinois competition.

Other LCHS speech team members who advanced to state competition preliminary rounds were Abrigail Sasse in radio, Colleen Fitzsimmons in oratory and Tristan Lemme in dramatic interpretation.

The students were accompanied to the state finals by LCHS speech coach Carrie Schreiber and assistant coaches Josh Twente and Goldie Jacko.
