Byron ‘Nip’ Behrends

Byron "Nip" Richard Behrends, 71, of Emden died at 7:55 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at Hopedale Medical Center, Hopedale.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, 2001, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hartsburg, with the Rev. David Russell officiating.

Burial will be in Hartsburg Union Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 20, at St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hartsburg.

Behrends was a retired grain and livestock farmer.

He was born Sept. 7, 1930, at Hartsburg to Dirk and Florence Minch Behrends. He married Geneva Klokkenga on Aug. 16, 1953, in Emden. She survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Bruce R. (and wife Susan) Behrends of Tremont and Scott A. (and Lori) Behrends of Hartsburg; one daughter, Sonja (and Doug) Tillman of Emden; three grandsons, Justin Behrends of Emden, Kevin Behrends of Hartsburg and Bradley Behrends of Tremont; three granddaughters, Megan Backs and Valerie and Melissa Tillman, all of Emden; three brothers, John W. (and Kathy) Behrends of Forsyth, Ronald "Joe" (and Lila) Behrends of Pekin and Dirk (and Nancy) Behrends of Delavan; and four sisters, Virginia (and Robert) Klokkenga of Hartsburg, Barbara Thomas of Bloomington, Gretchen Little of Quincy and Jennie Schleder (and Duane) of Warrensburg.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Robert "Bud" Behrends.

Behrends was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Hartsburg and served on the church board. He served on the Hartsburg Grain Co. board of directors for 34 years and was president for 22 years. He was the third generation to live on the family farm.

Memorials may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church, Hartsburg, or St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.


Michael Heyen

Michael David "Mike" Heyen, 23, of Lincoln died at 2:05 Saturday, Nov. 17, 2001, at Memorial Medical Center Emergency Room in Springfield.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, at Holland and Barry Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Burial will be in Irish Grove Cemetery, Middletown.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.

Heyen was a self-employed grain and hog farmer.

He was born Dec. 5, 1977, in Columbia, Mo.

Surviving are his father, Rudy Heyen of rural Greenview; his mother, Lynette Lucas Yaeger and her husband, Randy, of Columbia, Mo.; his paternal grandmother, Ilda Heyen of rural Greenview; his maternal grandparents, Eugene and Ruth Worth Lucas of Elkhart; two brothers, Brent Heyen of Mason City and Kevin Heyen and wife Elizabeth of Ashland, Mo.; one sister, Lori Heyen of Lincoln; one niece, Victoria Fitzpatrick of Lincoln; two nephews, Kevin and Brandon Heyen of Ashland, Mo.; and aunts, uncles, cousins and other relatives.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Rudolph Heyen.

He was of the Protestant faith.

He graduated from Lincoln Community High School in 1996 and attended Lincoln Land Community College in Springfield for 1½ years.

Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.


Robert Rice

Robert E. Rice, 68, of Lincoln died at 3:04 a.m. Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, at St. John’s Hospital Emergency Room in Springfield.

He was cremated. Holland and Barry Funeral Home handled local arrangements.

There will be no service or visitation.

Rice retired from the Ball Incon glass factory in Lincoln in 1988.

He was born Sept. 4, 1933, to Fred and Ethel (Trobaugh) Rice. He married Marilyn Dennis in Lincoln on April 20, 1954. She survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Carolyn Tripp of Lincoln; two sons, David Rice of Lincoln and Jim Rice; three grandchildren; one brother, Jim Rice of Ocala, Fla.; and three sisters, Joyce Brady of Temple Terrace, Fla., Lois Loomis of Ocala, Fla., and Helen Kindred of Lincoln.

He was preceded in death by one brother, Bill Rice.

He was of the Protestant faith.

Mildred Osborn

Mildred E. Osborn, 100, of Lincoln, formerly of New Holland, died at 10:45 a.m. Monday, Nov. 19, 2001, at the Christian Village.

Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Nov. 23, at First United Methodist Church of New Holland, with the Rev. Larry Maffett officiating.

Burial will be in Richmond Grove Cemetery, New Holland.

Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church.

Arrangements are being handled by Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Mrs. Osborn was a homemaker.

She was born Dec. 30, 1900, in New Holland to John and Lydia Huffman Bracey. She married Walter Osborn on Feb. 6, 1919, in New Holland. He died in August 1958.

Surviving are two daughters, Lydia "Lee" (and husband Ray) Lemme of Lincoln and Josephine "Jo" Laun of Lincoln; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and one brother, Charles Bracey of New Holland.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, one sister and one grandson.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church of New Holland and the United Methodist Women’s Society.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church of New Holland or the Lincoln Christian Village Resident Fund.

Harold Haines

Harold L. Haines, 91, of East Peoria, formerly of McLean, died at 7:35 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, 2001, in Peoria.

Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 24, at the McLean United Methodist Church. The Rev. Al Simonson will officiate.

Interment of cremains will be in McLean Cemetery.

Quiram Funeral Home, Atlanta, is in charge of arrangements.

Haines was employed as a printer at the Daily Pantagraph in Bloomington for several years before he retired in 1975.

He was born Sept. 4, 1910, at Atlanta to Alphus O. and Emma Gail Spindler Haines. He married Elizabeth Baker on Nov. 21, 1951, at McLean.

Surviving Haines are his wife, of East Peoria, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by one sister.

He was a member of the Pantagraph retirees, Typographical Union, Miller Park Pinochle Group, McLean Senior Citizens, Atlanta Christian Church and a 60-year member of the Atlanta Masonic Lodge.

He and his wife enjoyed training and showing collie dogs in obedience.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or a charity of the donor’s choice.


Dorothy Sandrolini

Dorothy M. Sandrolini, 79, of Lincoln died at 11:38 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.

Her funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Nov. 21, at Resurrection Lutheran Church in LaSalle, with the Rev. John Onderko officiating.

Visitation will be from 9 to 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Mueller-Pagani Funeral Home in LaSalle. A prayer service will be at 9:30 a.m.

Kerrigan Funeral Home is in charge of Lincoln arrangements.

Mrs. Sandrolini was a homemaker.

She was born Dec. 15, 1921, in Peru, Ill., to George and Marie Mueller Sledgister. She married Emil Sandrolini in September 1949 in LaSalle. He died Dec. 17, 1991.

Surviving are her mother, Marie; three daughters, Ellen (wife of Kevin) Stotmeister of Oceanside, Calif., Laura Sandrolini of Lincoln and Lisa (wife of Mark) Everette of Hinsdale; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one sister, Betty (wife of Sam) Curatolo of Utica.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, one sister and one daughter, Melanie Lavender.

She was a member of Holy Family Church in Lincoln and AARP.

Mass cards may be given.
