Carl Whitley

Carl A. Whitley, 94, of Mason City died at 5:06 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2001, at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Lincoln.

His funeral will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at Hurley Funeral Home in Mason City, with the Rev. Robert Paddack officiating.

Burial will be in Oakford Cemetery, Oakford.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at the funeral home.

Whitley was a meat cutter for many years. He worked at several places in Mason City. He was born Sept. 11, 1907, in Oakford to George A. and LuElla Pedigo Whitley. He married Mary Belle Hill on Nov. 28, 1927, in Petersburg. She died June 22, 1985.

Surviving are one sister, Gladys L. Aper of Hartsburg, and several nieces and nephews.

He was also preceded in death by two sons, Allan and infant son Elmer; three brothers; and two sisters.

He was a member of the Over 55 Club in Mason City.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mason City Area Nursing Home.


Letha Elam

Letha J. Elam, 88, of Lincoln died at 8:01 p.m. Monday, Oct. 15, 2001, at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.

Her funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Friday, Oct. 19, at Kerrigan Funeral Home in Lincoln, with the Rev. Carroll Richards officiating.

Burial will be in Zion Cemetery, Lincoln.

Visitation will be from noon until 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Elam was a homemaker.

She was born April 25, 1913, in Flatwood, Mo., to Russell and Susan Chastine Phillips. She married Earl Elam on April 25, 1930, in Lebanon, Mo. He died Dec. 20, 1965.

Surviving are one son, Loyd Elam of Lincoln; six grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Clifton Phillips of Havana; and one sister, Edith Reeves of Lebanon, Mo.

She was also preceded in death by one daughter, one grandson, one sister and one brother.

Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.

Irene Broughton

Irene F. "Granny" Broughton, 98, died at 5:45 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at St. Clara’s Manor in Lincoln.

Her funeral service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln, with the Rev. Larry Maffett officiating.

Burial will be in Union Cemetery, Lincoln.

Visitation will be one hour before the service at the funeral home.

Mrs. Broughton and her husband owned and operated Harold’s Furniture and Linoleum in Lincoln for 30 years.

She was born April 3, 1903, in Logan County to Asa J. and Lillian Carson French. She married Harold V. Broughton on Aug. 9, 1922, in Mount Pulaski. He died June 13, 1987.

Surviving are one son, Richard "Dick" W. (and wife Ginny) Broughton of Lincoln; one daughter, Gladys Bailey of Heath, Ohio; 10 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Helen Martin and Anna Hessner, both of Lincoln, and Alice McKenzie of Decatur.

She was also preceded in death by one son, Robert H. Broughton; one daughter, Julia M. Broughton; one granddaughter, Jill M. Broughton; one great-granddaughter, Kara Broughton; and one grandson, Harold "Butch" Blacet.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Lincoln and Willing Workers of the church. She was a charter member of Zonta Club and the Emblem Club.

Memorials may be made to the donor’s choice.

Sandra Dawson

Sandra Y. Dawson, 37, of Lincoln died at 12:37 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2001, at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Lincoln.

Her funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 20, at Second Baptist Church in Lincoln, with the Rev. Glenn Shelton officiating.

Burial will be in New Union Cemetery, Lincoln.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at Holland and Barry Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Mrs. Dawson was a correctional officer at Logan Correctional Center for nine years.

She was born Jan. 8, 1964, in Chicago to Samuel and Annie Mae Hoskins Butler. She married Alexander Dawson on Dec. 13, 1991, in Lincoln. He survives.

Also surviving are two children, Paris R. Williams and Dominique D. Dawson, both of Lincoln; one sister, Frankie Luckett of Country Club Hills; and three brothers, Jamie Butler of Springfield and Raymond Butler and Sammie Lee Butler, both of Chicago; and her mother.

She was preceded in death by her father.

She was a member of Second Baptist Church in Lincoln for 16 years.

Memorials may be made to the church’s building fund.
