John Prince

John L. Prince, 61, of Lincoln died at 7:22 a.m. Friday, April 5, 2002, at his home.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday, April 8, at Holland and Barry Funeral Home in Lincoln.

His funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Holland and Barry, with the Rev. Don Hoover officiating.

Burial, with military rites, will be in New Union Cemetery, Lincoln.

He was a correctional officer with the Department of Corrections.

He served in the U.S. Army in the early 1960s.

He was born March 23, 1941, in Springerton to Robert M. and Jaunita Hagood Prince. He married Betty L. Curry on May 16, 1961, in Lincoln. She survives.

Other survivors are five sons, John Prince Jr. (and Jeanie) of Chatham, Mark D. Prince (and Denise) of Carterville, Bobby J. Prince (and Elizabeth) of Lincoln, Michael R. Prince of Lincoln and Roger L. Prince of St. Louis; one daughter, Beth A. Prince of Lincoln; 14 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Dwaine Kennett of Lincoln; and two sisters, Betty J. Pflug of Springfield and Shirley Swilley of Arizona.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his stepfather, Ezekiel Kennett; and one brother, Carroll Kennett Sr.

He was a member of the American Legion in Lincoln, to which memorials may be made.


Beverly Wachter

Beverly Mary Wachter, 89, of Mount Pulaski died at 7:15 p.m. Thursday, April 4, 2002, at Vonderlieth Living Center.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, April 7, 2002, at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Mount Pulaski. There will be a prayer service at 6 p.m.

Mrs. Wachter’s funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday, April 8, at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Mount Pulaski, with Father Patrick DeMeulemeester officiating.

Burial will be in Mount Pulaski Cemetery.

She was a wife, mother and homemaker.

She was born March 10, 1913, in Rapid City, S.D., to Myron John and Margaret Mulligan Eggers. She married Elmer F. Wachter on Feb. 21, 1933, in Gettysburg, S.D. He died Aug. 6, 1982.

Surviving are two daughters, Mary M. (and Darrell) Knauer of Mount Pulaski and Sharon A. (and Kenneth) Gerdes of Mount Pulaski; five grandchildren, Kim Knauer of Springfield, Kent Gerdes of Springfield, Annette (and Scott) Detwiler of Normal, Kevin (and Monica) Knauer of Mount Pulaski, and Steven Gerdes of Acworth, Ga.; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was a member of St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church in Mount Pulaski.

Her family moved to Gettysburg, S.D., from Weta, S.D. in 1920. She received her education in Potter County and Gettysburg schools. She graduated from high school in 1930.

After her marriage, she and Elmer moved to Illinois in August of 1934. They were engaged in farming east of Mount Pulaski. Beverly worked for Florence (Romer) Schroth in the ice cream shop next to the theater in Mount Pulaski for some time. She also worked for Fritz Zimmerman, in the meat department, and also for Blue’s for several years.

Memorials may be made to her church, to the American Cancer Society or the donor’s choice.

Michael McCain

Michael Hal McCain, 54, of Lincoln died at 5:30 a.m. Friday, April 5, 2002, at his home.

He will be cremated.

A celebration of life will be held later for family and friends.

There will be no services. Holland and Barry Funeral Home in Lincoln is in charge of arrangements.

Mike had several careers, but the one he was proudest of and enjoyed the most was as a contract mainframe computer programmer for CIBER, Inc., Springfield.

He was born Jan. 8, 1948, in Bloomington to Homer H. "Mike" and Bernice Kahle McCain. He married Barbara Klemstine on Oct. 6, 1973, in Roselle. She survives, in Lincoln.

Other survivors are three brothers, Jeffrey (and Vicki) McCain of Bloomington, Lynn McCain of Bloomington, Mark (and Brenda) McCain of Normal; four sisters, Rose Ann Olson of Carlock, Susan (and Arlen) Sieg of Shirley, Betty McCain of Normal and Marsha (and Rick) Beard of Shirley; and nieces, nephews, aunts and uncles.

He was a 1966 graduate of Normal Community High School, and in 1970 he graduated from Illinois State University with a bachelor’s degree in agriculture. He received his Certificate of Achievement in Foundation Computing Technologies (COBOL) from ISU InfoTech in 1999.
