Lincoln boys set records at state championship meet

[AUG. 5, 2002]  The Lincoln Gator Swim Club has had a great year. Numerous swimmers from the age group team beat team records both last (short course) season and from the opening of this (long course) season. Two team members, Sam Wood and Brennan Elsas, continued breaking team records this past weekend as they competed in the Illinois championships in Lincolnshire. Only the top swimmers in the state of Illinois attend this meet. Swimmers compete in events in which they have achieved Junior Olympic times during the current season.

Both Sam and Brennan competed in the events for boys 10 and under. Though Brennan falls into the 8 and under category, that age group is not offered at the state championship level, so he was competing as a 10 and under. Sam earned an eighth-place medal for his 100 fly, also breaking the 10 and under team record in that event. Brennan broke two of his own records in the 8 and under division, in the 200 IM and 100 fly.

Congratulations to both Sam and Brennan, all the Gators, their coaches and supportive parents on a great season with lots of achievements!

Quick mutterings

By Jeff Mayfield

[JULY 29, 2002]  I have to admit that I turned the TV off long before the Cardinals stunned the Cubs 10-9 last night on Edgar Renteria’s three-run walk-off bomb! The Redbirds scored six times in the bottom of the ninth to finish off a near-perfect day! Cards are now five games in front of the Reds and six ahead of the Astros.

Ozzie Smith was the only player inducted to the Hall of Fame on Sunday as well. I didn’t get to catch his acceptance speech, but friends said it was hilarious and a wonderful moment… and some of those guys are Cubs fans!

Lance Armstrong won his fourth Tour de France. He just must be the biggest stud in that sport.

Didn’t see much of the men’s golf tourneys this weekend, but the women’s play was outstanding. I believe Park won in a sudden death playoff. Kelli Kuhene fizzled the last two days, and Annika almost came back to win again. I really recommend that you go out and see these ladies play when they come to Springfield. It’s worth the price of admission!
