Doris Spellman

Doris O. Spellman, 91, of Lincoln died at 9:20 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at the Christian Village Nursing Home.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Holland and Barry Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Her funeral will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Holland and Barry, with the Rev. Richard Reinwald officiating.

Burial will be in New Union Cemetery, Lincoln.

Mrs. Spellman was a homemaker for her family.

She was born April 3, 1911, in Poteau, Okla., to John A. and Elfrieda T. Weishampt Oxley. She married Edward L. Spellman on July 18, 1934, in Poteau, Okla. He died May 13, 1983.

Surviving are four children, John L. Spellman of Phoenix, Ariz., Henry A. Spellman of Lincoln, James O. Spellman of Lincoln and Ann S. Liesman of Lincoln; three grandchildren, Michael A. Davis Jr. of Fairbanks, Alaska, Edward L. Spellman II of Bedford, Ind., and Charles D. Spellman of Tempe, Ariz.; five great-grandchildren, Gavin and Elora Davis of Fairbanks, Alaska, and Katherine, Sarah and Benjamin Spellman of Bedford, Ind.; and one sister, Mary O. McEachron of Evanston.

She was also preceded in death by one brother, Alexander J. Oxley, and one grandson, Eric M. Spellman.

She graduated from Lindenwood College with a bachelor's degree in piano and was also a graduate of the Eastman Conservatory.

She was a member of PEO, Lincoln Garden Club and the Friday Book Club.

Robert Walker

Robert L. Walker, 79, of Lincoln died at 2:48 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 3, 2002, at St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln, with the Rev. Jame Hahs officiating. Visitation will be from noon until the service time.

Burial will be in Zion Cemetery, Lincoln.

Mr. Walker retired from Hoagland Transfer, Lincoln. He also worked for Cyrulik Concrete in Clinton.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was born May 20, 1923, in Peoria to Louis and Helen Scheid Walker. He married Betty J. Sherwood on Jan. 11, 1947, in Clarksdale, Miss. She died Feb. 7, 2001.

Surviving are two daughters, Suzette Hedenberg of Decatur and Shelley Walker of Blue Mound; three grandsons, David Hedenberg of Decatur and Josh and Robert Fuller of Blue Mound; one great-granddaughter, Faith Ann Fuller of Pana; two sisters, Pat Black of Lincoln and Jane Thomas of Tuscaloosa, Ala.; and a special friend, Jean Berglin of Lincoln.

He was of the Presbyterian faith.

Rolland Thompson

Rolland W. Thompson, 80, of Lincoln died at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at the Christian Village Nursing Home.

His funeral will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Holland and Barry in Lincoln, with the Rev. Richard Reinwald officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service.

Burial will be in New Union Cemetery, Lincoln.

Mr. Thompson did construction work as a self-employed cement mason.

He was born Nov. 29, 1922, in Thornton, Iowa, to Harry and Mabel Lee Thompson. He married Winifred Krause on Jan. 15, 1948, in Lincoln. She survives.

Other survivors are two daughters, Katheryn Geitl of Springfield and Kisa Thompson of San Rafael, Calif.; one son, Kevin Thompson of Santa Clara, Calif.; four granddaughters; and one sister, Reva Anderson of Galena, Mo.

He was preceded in death by three sisters, Ethel Tolles, Wilma Yeazle and Rose Vlahovich, and two brothers, Donald and Earl Thompson.

He was a member of St. John United Church of Christ in Lincoln.

Memorials may be made to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation.


Mary 'Liz' Spurling

Mary E. "Liz" Spurling, 80, of Lincoln died at 10:47 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2002, at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.

Her funeral will be at 11:30 a.m. Saturday at Kerrigan-Peasley Funeral Home in Lincoln, with Father Thomas Taylor officiating. Visitation will be from 10 until 11:30 a.m.

Burial will be in Zion Cemetery, Lincoln.

Mrs. Spurling retired from Lincoln College. She had also worked at Barr's Shoe Store and Lincoln Container.

She was born Aug. 23, 1922, in Breckenridge, Ky., to Larkin and Emma Langley. She married Merlin "Murph" Spurling on Feb. 12, 1944, at St. Patrick's rectory in Lincoln. He died in 1985.

Surviving are three sons, Terry (and Colleen) Spurling of Ottawa, Gary (and Barb) Spurling of Bloomington and Larry D. Spurling of Lincoln; four grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one sister, Margaret "Marge" Goss of Avon Park, Fla.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by four brothers.

She was a member of Holy Family Church.

Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
