Heat advisory continues this afternoon

Heat and humidity will combine to produce heat index values from 105 to 110 across the area this afternoon. Clouds and thunderstorms should bring some relief to much of the area by evening.

Dangerous heat and humidity is expected across portions of central, east central and southeast Illinois again today.

Abundant humidity will once again combine with temperatures climbing into the 90s to produce dangerously high heat index values across much of the region today. Heat index values will likely reach from 105 to 110 degrees southeast of a Beardstown-to-Bloomington line this afternoon. The heat index will be slightly lower today to the northwest of this line as a cold front begins to impact the region and bring slightly cooler conditions to the area.

The cold front will move through all of the area by Tuesday morning, bringing cooler conditions to the region for midweek.

Children, the elderly and people with chronic ailments are usually the first to suffer from the heat. Heat exhaustion, cramps, or, in extreme cases, heat stroke can result from prolonged exposure to these conditions. Friends, relatives or neighbors should check on people who may be at risk.

If you must be outside today, wear light-colored clothing, take plenty of breaks and drink plenty of fluids.
