Weather alert

Flood watch for today and tonight

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for today and tonight for locations along and south of a line from Canton to Lincoln to Champaign/Urbana.

Some cities affected by the watch are Lincoln, Springfield, Decatur, Champaign/Urbana, Taylorville, Jacksonville, Charleston/Mattoon, Effingham, Danville and Lawrenceville.

A slow-moving cold front will combine with an atmosphere that is loaded with moisture to produce the possibility of heavy rain that may cause flooding. Rainfall across some of the areas within the watch has already totaled 2 to 4 inches over the past 24 hours. Another 2 to 4 inches of rain will be possible in the watch area over the next 24 hours.

A flood watch means that conditions are favorable for heavy rain that may lead to flooding of low-lying areas and along rivers and streams. If you are in the watch area, remain informed and be ready to take action if flooding is observed or a warning is issued.

Stay tuned to NOAA weather radio or your local media for further details and updates.
