Amelia Casstevens

Amelia M. "Millie" Casstevens, 85, of Lincoln died at 12:40 p.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader, with Tom Gerdts officiating.

Burial will be in Zion Cemetery, Lincoln.

Mrs. Casstevens retired from Stetson China Company.

She was born Feb. 16, 1917, in Lincoln to Valentine and Marie Krotz Kapik. She married Leo Rohlfs in 1936, and he died in 1952. She married Ralph Casstevens in Lincoln on April 23, 1955. He survives.

Also surviving are two sons, Gary Rohlfs of Lincoln and Lee Rohlfs of Anthem, Ariz.; one stepson, Robert Casstevens of Mendota; two stepdaughters, Paula Charlton of Fredrickstown, Mo., and Johanna Henson of Oakboro, N.C.; four grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Albert (and Ruth) Kapik of Lincoln and John Kapik of Lincoln.

She was also preceded in death by one sister and one stepson.

She was a member of North American Benefit Association and Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. She volunteered at the Pink Shutter and Christian Nursing Home.

Gertrude Starr

Gertrude L. Starr, 86, of Mason City died at 12:58 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at Mason City Area Nursing Home.

Cremation rites have been accorded, and there will be no services locally.

Hurley Funeral Home of Mason City is in charge of arrangements.

She worked as a registered nurse at the Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital, Hollywood, Calif., and also in Riverside, Calif.

She was born March 16, 1916, in San Jose to William F. and Hattie Smith.

Ms. Starr was divorced.

Surviving are one son, Kim (and Shannon) Starr of Temecula, Calif., and one grandchild.

She was preceded in death by two brothers.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mason City Area Nursing Home.


Dorothy Morrow

Dorothy M. Morrow, 83, of Lincoln died at 10:25 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 17, 2002, in her home.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Kerrigan-Peasley Funeral Home in Lincoln. The rosary will be recited at 5 p.m.

A Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Lincoln, with Father Thomas Taylor officiating.

Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lincoln.

Mrs. Morrow was a teacher in the Lincoln area for many years.

She was born Dec. 4, 1918, in Lincoln to Frank and Margaret Gabbett Peifer. She married Harold H. Morrow on Aug. 4, 1949, in St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Lincoln. He died Sept. 19, 1996.

Surviving are two daughters, Margaret (and Robert) Knol of Princeton and Jane (and Skip) Junkerman of Olmsted; two sons, Joe (and Lois) Morrow of Normal and Greg (and Peggy) Morrow of Lincoln; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one sister, Katherine Peifer of Lincoln.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, one sister and one grandson.

She was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and the Holy Family Society.

Memorials may be made to Holy Family Society, Carroll Catholic School or the VNA Hospice of Springfield.

Eva Harrison

Eva Inez Harrison, 59, of Mason City died at 8:35 a.m. Friday, Oct. 18, 2002, at Pekin Hospital in Pekin.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Hurley Funeral Home, 603 E. Chestnut in Mason City.

Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Hurley Funeral Home, with the Rev. Dustin Fulton officiating.

Burial will be in Mason City Cemetery.

Mrs. Harrison worked at Lincoln Developmental Center for 24 years as a mental health technician.

She was born Jan. 31, 1943, in Middleton, Tenn. Her first marriage was to Jackie Leroy Owens Sr., and he died May 19, 1969. She married William Harrison at Springbay on Nov. 14, 1969. He survives.

Also surviving are her mother, Luri Lowrance of Mason City; five sons, William (and Patricia) Harrison of San Jose, Gregory Harrison of Canton, and Tom (and Jennifer) Harrison, Jackie (and Judy) Owens Jr. and Randall Patrick Owens, all of Mason City; one daughter, Mendy (and Loren) Payne of Mapleton; 13 grandchildren; one brother, Forest Simer of Mason City; and one sister, Phyllis (and Jeff) Copeland of Logansport, Ind.

She was also preceded in death by her father, Edward Simer, and her stepfather, Charles Monroe Curry.

She was a member of the First Christian Church of Mason City.

She supported and participated in the Walk for Cancer for two years.

Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society.


Clara Kurtz

Clara E. Kurtz, 96, died at 7:15 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2002, at Vonderlieth Living Center, Mount Pulaski.

A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Zion Cemetery, Lincoln. Tom Gerdts will officiate.

There is no visitation. Arrangements are being handled by Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Mrs. Kurtz was a homemaker.

She was born June 3, 1906, in DeWitt County to Thomas T. and Clara Rode Furman. She married Merle W. "Bud" Kurtz on Dec. 19, 1925, in Clinton. He died April 18, 1994.

Surviving are one son, William F. (and Alice) Kurtz of Lincoln; two daughters, Clara "Kay" (and Norman "Andy") Anderson of Lake Havasu, Ariz., and Elnore Kurtz of Lake Havasu, Ariz.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Kurtz was the last of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by three brothers and four sisters.

She was a member of Lincoln Christian Church.

Memorials may be made to Vonderlieth Living Center.

Amanda Bree

Amanda Bree, 85, formerly of Lincoln, died at 7:27 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2002, at Hacienda de Monterey in Palm Desert, Calif.

Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Her funeral will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader.

Burial will be in Richmond Grove Cemetery, New Holland.

Mrs. Bree was formerly the owner of the Arcade Coffee Shop in Lincoln.

She was born Jan. 7, 1917, in Elkhart to John and Stella Coffey Shockey. She married Arthur William Bree on Oct. 5, 1945, in Lincoln. He died Aug. 7, 1990.

Survivors are three daughters, Donna (and Richard) Jacobs of Lincoln, Judy Morley (and Bob Williams) of Chicago, and Jan (and David) Kress of Phoenix, Ariz.; one granddaughter, Shannon Jacobs of Lincoln; and one brother, Col. Cyrus Reyon Shockey of Iowa City, Iowa.

She was also preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.

She was a member of First United Methodist Church of Lincoln, VFW Auxiliary, American Contract Bridge League and Indian Wells Country Club of Indian Wells, Calif.

Memorials may be made to Little City, 861 S. Algonquin Road, Palatine; or Elks Crippled Children, c/o Bob Cortelloni, 711 N. Union St., Lincoln.
