4th ‘Owl Prowl’

[OCT. 4, 2002]  The Illinois Raptor Center invites visitors for an evening educational tour of the center’s property with owls displayed in their appropriate habitat. The tour will end in the Sangamon River floodplain, where participants may hear wild barred and great horned owls.

4th annual Owl Prowl fund-raiser

Date:  Friday, Oct. 25, and Saturday, Oct. 26

Time and place:  6:30 p.m. at the Illinois Raptor Center, 5695 W. Hill Road, Decatur

Cost:  $15 per adult; children half price (includes prowl and refreshments)

Prowl rain or shine. Bring a flashlight and dress appropriately.

‘Shrink Rap’

[OCT. 23, 2002]  ^"Shrink Rap," by Robert B. Parker. G.P. Putnam’s Sons. 289 pages. Genre: mystery.

Sunny Randall, the capable, beautiful, blond private investigator, is back and in excellent form. In "Shrink Rap" she has been called upon to body guard the hugely successful romance writer Melanie Joan Hall during her cross-country tour to promote her latest best seller. Melanie is in need of a bodyguard because she is being stalked by her former psychotherapist, who is also her ex-husband.

Sunny begins her latest assignment with the belief that her client has nothing more than a case of overactive imagination, but soon finds out that she is dealing with something more real. Melanie’s ex, Dr. Melvin, begins to show up at every book signing, slowly driving Melanie to a state of near hysteria.

As Sunny delves further into the case, she decides to go undercover, masquerading as a client, and discovers that not only is Dr. Melvin a stalker, but he just may be a sexual predator and murderer.

"Shrink Rap" brings back the regulars of Mr. Parker’s Sunny Randall mysteries, and we find that Sunny eventually has to enlist the help of both the intimidating gay restaurant manager, Spike, and her ex-husband and soul mate, Richie, to aid in her investigation and watch her back.

Robert B. Parker is the author of more than 40 books, including the recent Spenser best seller "Widow’s Walk." He lives in Boston.

Lincoln Community Theatre elects officers

[OCT. 22, 2002]  The 2002 annual meeting of the board of directors of Lincoln Community Theatre resulted in the re-election of three board members and the addition of two new directors, Tom McLaughlin and Margo Schwab, both of Lincoln. Returning to serve another three-year term are Teri Fink, Louella Moreland and Roger Boss, all of Lincoln.

Officers elected for next year are Teri Fink, president; Jean Gossett, vice president; Roger Boss, secretary; and Rich Reinwald, treasurer.

Lincoln Community Theatre’s box office, phone 735-2614,  is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday through Saturday for the summer season. The office is located in the lobby of the Johnston Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of Lincoln College.

Performances of "Dearly Departed" are scheduled for July 12-20, and "The King and I" will be presented Aug. 2-10. Show times are 2 p.m. on Sundays and 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
