"Christien really showed a lot of
courage on Saturday," said coach Erin Verbeck. "She was definitely
not at 100 percent, but she did what it took to win the meet,
because she is a tough competitor. She’s got a real shot at being an
All-American at nationals if she races the way I know she can."
All of the Lynx women’s team earned
medalist honors, with Jenine Mills taking third place, Mary Daum
sixth and Betsy Scarpaci in eighth.
"I am so proud of these women," said
coach Verbeck. "They have all come so far since the first day of
practice. We felt good on Saturday and it showed. We definitely
overall had the best four women in the field. If we would have had a
fifth runner, we would have won the meet as a team," said coach
Verbeck.
On the men’s side, Lincoln College was
led by unattached runner Mark Shannahan with a season-best time of
29:36.
"Mark has really struggled all season
to get back to where he was when he left the sport a year and a half
ago," said Verbeck. "We finally saw great progress, and I’m anxious
to have him return next year as a scoring member of the team."
Closely following Mark was freshman
Mario Willbourn, who has been on the team for just 3½ weeks. He
finished in 11th place among qualified runners, narrowly missing
medalist honors.

"We’re excited to have Mario back next
year for a full season of training. Who knows how good he’ll be with
a full season of racing and training under his belt," said Verbeck.
Finishing in 15th and 16th places
respectively were Jordan Gerard and Justin Collins.
"Sophomore Justin Collins really pulled
through for this team," said Verbeck. "He has been struggling to
overcome an injury and has done virtually no running for the past
two weeks. He went out and gave it everything he had today, and it
showed. He will be missed next year on the team.
"Unfortunately it just wasn’t Jordan’s
day today. He had been practicing so well and will be a leader on
next year’s team. He really is a great runner, and his performance
today didn’t show his full potential."
The fifth runner for the Lynx was Russ
Holstine, finishing in 20th. He is a freshman who will return to the
team next year with a year of experience.
Rounding out the scoring for the Lynx
with personal bests were Justin Pogue, Ryan Skolansinski, Michael
Lister and Jake Kennedy.
"These kids
all looked and ran stronger than they’ve run all season," said
Verbeck. "We graduate both Justin and Ryan this year but look
forward to having Jake and Michael return for 2003. Their
improvement this season has been tremendous."

Springfield College won the first match
from the Lynx, 30-22, before Lincoln College bounced back to take
the next three matches, 30-23, 31-29 and 30-17.
"We made some costly mental errors in
the first match, but I was happy with the way we regrouped and
played consistently the rest of the night," said coach Mark Tippett.
"Our passing was strong, and Beth Guy
did an excellent job of running the offense. The third game almost
got away from us, but we came up with some huge defensive plays when
we needed them.
"In the fourth match, Mandi Dean served
eight points in a row to take command of the game and allow us to
win without going to a fifth match. I feel that our team is playing
their best volleyball of the season right now, and I was extremely
proud of their effort tonight.

"We play Parkland next, and we lost to
them early in the season in four matches. I believe that we can
upset them if we stay focused on doing the things we are capable of
doing and play with as much intensity as I have seen during the last
week of the season."
Janine
Buettner had 15 kills, 10 points and two digs, while Mandi Dean had
13 kills, 13 points and three aces. Beth Guy was credited with 42
set assists, and Angela Maestas came up with four digs.
