LCHS volleyball team places second in tourney

[SEPT. 16, 2002]  The Lincoln Community High School volleyball team placed second in the competitive St. Francis Borgia Missouri Invitational Volleyball Tournament.

The Lady Railers defeated Wright City, Mo., and Jefferson City, Mo., and lost to St. Francis Borgia to place second in the pool play. As the second-place finisher, the Lady Railers then took on the first-place finisher in the opposite pool for the semifinals and defeated Breese Mater Dei. That put Lincoln into the championship match with St. Francis Borgia. LCHS lost to St. Francis and received second place in the tournament.

This is the fourth year the Lady Railers have competed in this tournament and the first time that they have reached the championship match.

Compliments from officials and coaches as well as fans from opposing teams helped make it a very successful tournament for Lincoln. The comments were all positive and indicated how well the Railers played as a team, seemed to always have fun and always pushed their opponents to the limit.

Lynx soccer team comes home with another shutout

[SEPT. 16, 2002]  ROCKFORD — Piotr Chrobak scored a goal in the 20th minute of the first half, and Lincoln College made it stand up for a 1-0 victory over Rock Valley here Sunday afternoon. Lincoln College, 4-2, will be at home at 4 p.m. Wednesday against Lewis and Clark.

Fernando Delgado picked up an assist on the winning goal by Chrobak with a long kick.  Coach Mark Howard said, "We were playing on a little smaller field than usual, and that allowed Delgado to get the kick to Chrobak, who put the ball in the net."

"We got a good effort from everyone, especially on defense," said Howard. "We have been showing steady progress, and we created a lot of chances today. We just need to put the ball in the net. I think if we keep our focus, we are going to be a real good club."

Lincoln College finished the game with 22 shots on goal, while Rock Valley was able to manage just five. It is the second straight shutout for the Lynx. Rock Valley is now 1-2 for the season.

Rend Lake is one of the top teams in our region, and we were in a position to win against them in the second match; we just didn’t get it done."

Illini get first win of the year

By Greg Taylor

[SEPT. 16, 2002]  The Illinois football players celebrated their home opener in exciting fashion Saturday, destroying Arkansas State 59-7 in front of 46,000-plus fans.

[Click here for more Illini photos]

The turning point in this game was the national anthem, as it was apparent from the very beginning Illinois would outmatch the visitors from Jonesboro. Several Illini players had big days, and only a silly "taunting" penalty on Illinois linebacker Ty Myers allowed Arkansas to score, late in the first half. The LDN salutes the following Illini for their play on Saturday:

1.  Jon Beutjer — Given the starting job on Tuesday, Beutjer made coach Ron Turner look really good, as he completed 17 of 21 passes, including four TDs, and looked calm, cool and confident. Hopefully this will carry over to next week and Beutjer will be ready to roll for the Michigan game on the 28th.

2.  Brandon Lloyd — Yet another great day at the shop for the All-American from Blue Springs, Mo. Lloyd had six catches for 119 yards and a TD.

3.  Morris Virgil — The local product (Urbana High School) celebrated his first game at Memorial Stadium in grand fashion, rushing for 131 yards and 3 TDs and bringing the breakaway speed Illinois needs at the tailback position. His 69-yard touchdown run was Illinois’ longest running touchdown since 1988 and the Howard Griffith era at Illinois.

4.  The offensive line — They finally showed up ready to play (unlike the Mizzou and Southern Mississippi games) and gave Beutjer the time to throw and Virgil, Carey Davis and Antonio Harris the semi-truck-size holes to run through.

5.  The fans — After laying two eggs to start the season, Illinois’ fans still showed up and made themselves heard throughout the game. With four home games in the next six weeks (9-21, 9-28, 10-12, 10-26), look for the attendance to approach sellout status.

Overall, Saturday was a great victory for the Illinois football team. They return to action next Saturday at 1 p.m. at Memorial Stadium against a very talented San Jose State team. No TV for the game, so get out and check out the 2002 Illini. They look like they are finally headed in the right direction!

Bears hang on for squeaker over Falcons

By Jeff Mayfield

[SEPT. 16, 2002]  The Chicago Bears put on a dazzling display of defensive looks and ultimately stopped QB sensation Michael Vick and the Atlanta Falcons 14-13 Sunday in Hotlanta.

The Bears used a 14-yard strike from Jim Miller to David Terrell and a 3-yard Anthony Thomas TD jaunt to fend off the much-improved Falcons.

But it was the defense once again that was shining on this day. Brian Urlacher leaped over linemen, crashed through double-team blocking schemes, sacked Vick a couple of times, recovered a fumble, recorded 12 tackles and just basically willed the Bears to victory.

They still had to sweat a last-minute 45-yard Jay Feely field goal attempt, which fortunately went wide, to take home another improbable victory.

Why do I say that? Because as well as Atlanta has played, they should be at least 1-1 if not 2-0.  The Bears on the other hand could very easily be 1-1 if not 0-2. Such is the nature of the wild and wacky NFL. That’s what parity has done to this sport. Virtually anyone can win on any given Sunday.

Why Donald Fehr and the rest of baseball’s gurus fear parity so much, I’ll never understand. Maybe it would solve some of their sagging gate attendances? But since they don’t call us here at the LDN very often, I’ll guess we'll never be able to give them these winning strategies and ideas!

Next week the Champaign Bears face a stiff test in the New Orleans Saints, who whacked the Pack 35-20!

Quick mutterings

By Jeff Mayfield

[SEPT. 16, 2002]  The Cardinals did what they had to do, by taking two of the four against those pesky Astros. Hopefully, they will take care of business in the next several days and stave off Houston!

The Railers looked a bit sluggish versus Lanphier. The Lions have good overall team speed and quickness, and at times that seemed to be the difference between the two. We’re sure that we all hoped for a better showing, but we still have a good feeling about the possibilities for this team.

The Chicago Bears held on for a 14-13 squeaker over the improved Atlanta Falcons. The Bears defense totally dominated the second half, and that was the difference!

The Illinois Fighting Illini finally got into the win column with a 59-7 drubbing of the Arkansas State Indians. The Indians started strong but faded fast. Illini QB Jon Beutjer, in his first start for the Illini, looked pretty good to us. However, the Orange and Blue will have to play a lot better to beat teams like Michigan and Ohio State. Heck, they could even find themselves in a dogfight with San Jose State!  Click here for Illini photos.
