Young authors to attend conference

[MARCH 27, 2003]  Two local students will attend the 29th statewide Young Authors Conference at Illinois State University on May 17. Jaci Gandenberger, daughter of Gil and Bonnie Gandenberger of 302 Sixth St., will be the seventh-grade Lincoln Junior High representative, and Marc Allen Haduch, son of Laura Haduch of 401 Community Drive, will attend as a second-grader from Mrs. Sharon Cline's class at Northwest School.

These students will share their manuscripts with other young authors, meet guest speakers and enjoy lunch at ISU. Special sessions will be available for parents.

LaHood announces nominations
for military academies

[MARCH 26, 2003]  WASHINGTON -- Congressman Ray LaHood, R-Peoria, announced on March 18 the nominees from the 18th Congressional District to the United States military academies.

LaHood nominated these students for attendance at the academies after an interview process. Final determination on admission is made by the individual academies.

Cliff Carnahan of Lincoln
Cliff is the son of Mary and Mark Carnahan and is a senior at Lincoln Community High School.

F. Coleman Miller of Washington
Coleman is the son of Jane and Frederick Miller and is a senior at Washington Community High School.

Naval Academy

David Amerson of Springfield
David is the son of Marta Amerson and is a graduate of Sacred Heart-Griffin High School. He is currently in the Marines on active duty in Japan.

Jeff Denney of Jacksonville
Jeff is the son of Kathleen and Ben Denney and is a senior at Routt Catholic High School.

Andrew Gilliland of El Paso
Andrew is the son of Donna and Mark Gilliland and is a senior at El Paso High School.

Patrick Gilroy of Princeville
Patrick is the son of Teresa and Patrick Gilroy and is a senior at Princeville High School.

Megan Kane of Springfield
Megan is the daughter of Dorothy and Robert Kane and currently attends Lincoln Land Community College.

Parker Shelato of Rochester
Parker is the son of Ginger and Phil Shelato and is a graduate of Rochester High School.  She currently is in the Navy on active duty in Groton, Conn.

Melissa Crews of Princeville
Melissa is the daughter of Pam and Steve Crews and is a graduate of Princeville High School. She is a student at Illinois Wesleyan University and is currently studying abroad in Scotland.

James Hankins of Jacksonville
James is the son of Lusica and Jim Hankins and is a senior at Routt Catholic High School.

Greg Ihnken of Peoria
Greg is the son of Ingrid and Mark Ihnken and is a graduate of Naperville Central High School. He is a student at the College of DuPage.

Steve Pinkham of Springfield
Steve is the son of Lisa and Kenneth Pinkham and is a senior at Springfield High School.

[MARCH 25, 2003]  Lincoln College has introduced a new Web page design and address which provide the latest information about Lincoln College. The new site can be found at http://www.lincolncollege.edu.

Tony Schilling, director of admissions, who has been working on the project for the last six months, says the concept is to help improve efficiency and accessibility for those looking for information about Lincoln College on the Web. "Being a private two-year residential college, many people immediately associate Lincoln College with a community college institution, and we offer so much more. The college decided we needed an updated look for our site and to offer a comprehensive view of what Lincoln College is all about. The Web is an ideal way to keep the information current."

[MARCH 27, 2003]  Heather Lane Otto, daughter of Gus and Nancy Otto of 230 Grand Ave., has been accepted into the University Honors Program at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, where she is a freshman. Heather also was named to the Outstanding Student Honor Roll of the Department of Communication.

Girl Scouts announce scholarship opportunities

[JAN. 24, 2003]  SPRINGFIELD -- Girl Scouts, Land of Lincoln Council is announcing college scholarship opportunities to all eligible Girl Scout members within the 6½-county jurisdiction who are continuing their education at an accredited college or university.

Girl Scouts attending an accredited college, university or technical school may apply for the Girl Scouts, Land of Lincoln Council Scholarship. This scholarship is a one-year, $1,000 award and is renewable. To qualify, girls must be currently registered with Girl Scouts, Land of Lincoln Council and have been a member with the council for a minimum of three years.

Active Girl Scout members enrolling as a junior, senior or graduate student in an accredited college or university are eligible for the Linda S. Culver Scholarship. This scholarship is a one-year, $1,500 award and is renewable. To qualify, girls must be registered members with the Land of Lincoln Council and have been so for a minimum of three years.

Girl Scouts enrolling at Springfield College in Illinois also have the opportunity to apply for the Springfield College Girl Scout Scholarship. This scholarship is a $500 award and is renewable. For more information, please contact the college's financial aid office directly at (217) 525-1420.

Finally, Senior Girl Scout Gold Award recipients graduating in 2003 are encouraged to apply for the Elks National Foundation Scholarship. This scholarship is a $6,000 award.

Information on all Girl Scouts scholarships is available upon request by calling the Girl Scout Service Center, (217) 523-8159, or visiting www.girlscoutsllc.org. The deadline for applications is 5 p.m. Friday, April 11. Please note the Springfield College Girl Scout Scholarship has its own deadline.
