Helen Awe

Helen D. Awe, 84, of Lincoln died Tuesday (Aug. 26, 2003) at 1:20 p.m. at Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln, with the Rev. Richard Reinwald officiating. Visitation will be one hour before the service.

Burial will be in Union Cemetery.

Mrs. Awe retired from Lincoln Developmental Center. She had worked as supervisor in the kitchen for 35 years.

She was born Dec. 9, 1918, in Bernie, Mo., to William and Frances Wyatt Dority. She married Darrell Awe on June 30, 1941, and he died in 1965. She married George Awe on Sept. 24, 1966, and he died Oct. 29, 1990.

Survivors are one son, Richard D. (and Kathleen) Awe of Melbourne Beach, Fla.; two stepsons, Greg (and Amber) Awe of Fort Pearce, Fla., and Kenneth Awe of Missouri; one daughter, Karen F. (and Roy "Tal") Boyer of Lakeland, Fla.; two stepdaughters, Linda Cramer of Georgia and Susan (and Cortney) Johnson of Fort Pearce, Fla.; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, five sisters and one grandson. She was the last of her immediate family.

She was a member of St. John United Church of Christ, VFW Auxiliary, AARP, Ladies of the Moose and a 50-year member of the Rebekah Lodge.

Memorials may be made to St. John United Church of Christ in Lincoln.

Violet Hughes

Violet C. Hughes, 87, of Latham died Monday (Aug. 25, 2003) at 9:14 a.m. at Vonderlieth Living Center in Mount Pulaski.

Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Mount Pulaski.

Her funeral will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader in Mount Pulaski, with the Rev. Gilbert Fletcher officiating.

Burial will be in Laenna Cemetery, Chestnut.

Mrs. Hughes worked as a mental health technician.

She was born April 2, 1916, in Chestnut to John and Jessie Lakin Schrishuhn. She married William G. Hughes in Palmyra on June 1, 1940. He died Oct. 23, 1980.

Survivors are two sons, William G. (and Carolyn) Hughes of Latham and John W. (and Cheryl) Hughes of Latham; two daughters, Jessie L. (and Gary) Kroll of Decatur and Linda S. Hughes of Lincoln; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by four brothers and one sister.

She was a member of Latham Methodist Church.

Maude Hutchins

Maude Mae Hutchins, 77, of Mechanicsburg, formerly of Springfield, died Sunday (Aug. 24, 2003) at 9:03 a.m. at St. Vincent Hospital in Taylorville.

Her funeral was Wednesday morning at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Mount Pulaski, with John Robertson officiating. Visitation preceded the service.

Burial is in Steenbergen Cemetery, Mount Pulaski.

Miss Hutchins worked for Sangamo Electric and Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

She was born March 20, 1926, in Cornland to Mikel and Maude Boggs Hutchins.

Survivors are one sister, Lela Thompson of Aurora, Colo., and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

She was preceded in death by her parents and four sisters.

She was a member of Pleasant Plains Christian Church.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation, American Heart Association or Pleasant Plains Christian Church.

Wilfred Leinweber

Wilfred Ernest "Woodie" Leinweber, 91, of San Jose, died Tuesday (Aug. 26, 2003) at 3:35 p.m. at Mason City Area Nursing Home.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Hurley Funeral Home in Mason City.

His funeral will be at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, rural Manito, with the Rev. Don Hinkel officiating.

Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery, rural San Jose.

Mr. Leinweber was a farmer who raised registered polled Herefords.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

He was born Oct. 20, 1911, at San Jose to Phillip and Maggie Classen Leinweber.

Survivors are one nephew, Dick (and Linda) Garlisch of Forest City, and three nieces, Janet (and John) Cunningham of Mason City, Marilyn (and Mike) Sebring of Sherman and Dolores (and Jim) Curry of Mason City.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Florence Garlisch and Ruby Robinson, and two brothers, Clarence Leinweber and George Leinweber.

He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Manito, the Mason County Farm Bureau and the Registered Polled Hereford Association.

Memorial contributions may be made to St. Paul's Lutheran Church or to Mason City Area Nursing Home.


Marjorie Scherer

Marjorie V. Scherer, 95, of Mason City, formerly of San Francisco, Calif., died Monday (Aug. 25, 2003) at 6 a.m. at Abraham Lincoln Memorial Hospital in Lincoln.

There will be no services.

Burial of ashes will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Colma, Calif.

Miss Scherer had last been employed as a secretary at Curran Theatre in San Francisco, Calif.

She was born Oct. 9, 1907, in Quincy to Thomas A. and Alice Ida Knight Scherer.

Several nieces and nephews survive. The following four nieces were caregivers for her: Patricia Hovey of Easton, Marjorie (and Ron) Pottorf of Easton, Janice (and Gordon) Hannagan of Penfield and Jane Kidd of West Chicago.

Miss Scherer was of the Catholic faith.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mason City Area Nursing Home.


Leland Pottorf

Leland G. Pottorf, 83, of Mason City died Monday (Aug. 25, 2003) at 4:09 a.m. at St. John's Hospital in Springfield.

His funeral was Wednesday morning at Hurley Funeral Home in Mason City, with the Rev. Bruce Bolin-Ghitalla officiating. Visitation was Tuesday evening at the funeral home.

Burial is in Mason City Cemetery.

Mr. Pottorf was employed at Keystone Steel and Wire in Peoria for 40 years.

He was a veteran of the Army Air Corps.

He was born April 1, 1920, in Mason City to John and Dora Dodson Pottorf. He married Hazel "Dee" Loeffler on March 30, 1947, and she died May 7, 1986.

Survivors are two sons, Ronnie Irvin of Mason City and Terry (and Peggy) Pottorf of Mason City; one daughter, Cheryle Diver of Mason City; four grandchildren and five stepgrandchildren; three great-grandchildren and three step-great-grandchildren; and a companion, Alice Smith of Mason City.

He was also preceded in death by one sister, Beverly Wasilewski.

He was a member of Eagles, Jolly Club and Mason City Legion Post 496.

Memorial contributions may be made to American Heart Association or American Diabetes Association.


Kevin Olson

Kevin R. Olson, 43, of Pleasant Plains, formerly of Lincoln, died Saturday (Aug. 23, 2003) at 9:19 a.m. in an automobile accident in Sangamon County.

His funeral service was Wednesday morning at Jefferson Street Christian Church in Lincoln, with Craig Smith officiating. Visitation was on Tuesday at the Kerrigan-Peasley Funeral Home in Lincoln and one hour prior to the service at the church on Wednesday.

Burial is in Bethel Cemetery, rural Emden.

Mr. Olson worked for Moghan Construction in Springfield.

He was born July 15, 1960, in Hopedale to Harlan K. and Mary G. Whittaker Olson. He married Kim Day on Sept. 14, 1995, in Springfield. She survives.

Other survivors are his mother, of Lincoln; three sons, Joshua Olson of Clinton and Kavet and Garret Olson of Pleasant Plains; two brothers, Dale (and Carol) Olson of Emden and Larry (and Beth) Olson of Lincoln; and two sisters, Marla (and Mark) Gates of Lincoln and Kay (and Jim) Newton of Lincoln.

He was preceded in death by his father and grandparents.

He attended Hartsburg-Emden schools and graduated from Hartem High School.

Memorials may be made for an education fund that is being set up at the Logan County Bank in Lincoln.
