Annetta Van Hoorn, 102, formerly of Atlanta and McLean passed away on December 28, 2003 at 9:00 a.m. in St. Clara's Manor Nursing Home in Lincoln  (Natural Causes).

Funeral services for Mrs. Van Hoorn will be held on Tuesday, December 30, 2003 at 10:30 a.m. at the United Methodist Church of McLean with Reverend Al Simonson officiating.

Visitation will be from 9:30 until 10:30 a.m. at the church on Tuesday.

Memorials can be made to St. Clara's Manor or to the donor's choice.

Burial will be in Mt. Hope Cemetery in rural McLean.

Mrs. Van Hoorn is survived by five children: Margaret (Leon) Renfrow of Atlanta, George (Audra) Van Hoorn of Atlanta,
Marvin (Robin) Van Hoorn of Beason, Doris (Stanley) Evans of Leroy, Paul (Linda) Van Hoorn Jr. of Atlanta.

Fourteen grandchildren, Twenty-seven great grandchildren, Seven great great grandchildren.

Mrs. Van Hoorn was born on January 29, 1901 in Visquard, Germany to Martinus and Mika Eeten Saathoff.

She married Paul Van Hoorn on February 21, 1928 in Hartsburg, Illinois. He preceded her in death on January 19, 1984.

She came to the United States of America from Germany in 1923.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of McLean.

Member of Mt. Hope Ladies Aid. and American Legion Auxilary.

Mildred T. ‘Ditter’ Behrends, 89, of Mason City passed away on Saturday, Dec. 27, 2003 at Mason City Nursing Home.

Mrs. Behrends was the daughter of Leonard and Jesse (Dalby) Thomas. She was born in Mason City on July 4, 1914. She married Herbert Kramme in Mo. in 1941. He died. She married Theodore Behrends in Mason County in 1956. He died in 1983.

Surviving are one son, Ron Kramme, Lexington; one step daughter, Ruth Dowell, Colfax; two grandchildren and one great grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Alberta Heinhorst; three brothers, Arthur, Leonard and Ira Thomas.

She worked in the Selective Service Program for the U.S. Government. She was also the church organist at the First Christian Church of Mason City and St. Columba’s Catholic Church in Mason City. She was a member of the former.

Visitation will be Monday, Jan. 29 from 5 – 7 p.m. at Hurley Funeral Home Mason City.
The funeral will be Tuesday, Jan. 30 at 10:30 a.m. at First Christian Church, Mason City, with Rev. Dustin Fulton presiding. She will be buried at Mason City Cemetery.

Memorial may be made to Illini Central Music Program.

Glenn L. Martin, 98, of Lincoln died at 10:15 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 25 at Maple Ridge Care Centre.

Mr. Martin was born to Zachie and Blanche Adell (Miller) Martin on Oct. 14, 1905 in Lincoln. He married Maybelle Rigg on May 16, 1928.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, two brothers, Vigil and Paul Martin; and one grand daughter, Cathy. He was the last member of his immediate family.

He is survived by two children; Richard L. Martin, Lincoln and Joyce H. Moore, Placetia, CO; two grand children and five great grand children.

Mr. Martin worded at Stetson China and at Cuttler Hammer. He was a member of the Methodist Church and the Lincoln Masonic Lodge and Eastern Star.

Holland and Barry Funeral Home is handling arrangements. He will be cremated.


Arthur Wayne Hankins, Jr., 75, of LaBella, Florida died of natural causes at Memorial Medical Center on Friday, Dec. 26, 2003.

Visitation will be 10 – 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 29 at Mason City Methodist Church. A service is scheduled at 11 a.m. with the Rev. Bruce Bolin Ghitalia officiating. He will be cremated and buried at Mason City Cemetery at a later date. Hurley Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Mr. Hankins worked with seed corn companies in Ames, IA., Shenandoah, IA., Mason City and Kihei, Maui before retiring to Labelle, FL. in 1994.
He was born Feb. 1, 1928 to Arthur Wayne and Naomi (Bowser) Hankins, Sr. in Muscatine, IA. His mother survives.
He married Norma Royene Badham in Kahoka, MO. in 1947. She survives.

Also surviving are two daughters, Valerie Jo Sarginson of Naples, FL. and Toni Royene McDaniel of Mason City; one son, Roy (Dorothy Anderson) Dewayne Hankins of Madison, MN.; three brothers, Joe Kathy) Hankins of Iowa, Gordon (Connie) Hankins of Naperville, Tom (Debbie) Hankins of IA.; one sister, Jane (Bill) Wulford of IA.

He was preceded in death by his father and a son-in-law, Denny Sarginson, who was married to Valerie Jo.

Memorials may be made to the Mason City United Methodist Church or the donor’s choice.


William Henry (Bob) Zessin, 82, of Petersburg died at Memorial Medical Center on Friday, Dec. 26, 2003. Mr. Zessin worked on the farm with his father until 1953 and then moved to Mason City where he worked for National By Products and then Robertson’s Disposal. He retired in 1982.

He was born to Carl and Clara (Schultz) Zessin on Feb. 21, 1921 in Farmington, Il. He never married. He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Ernest Alfred, Loren (Tiny) Zessin and three sisters, Eleanor Zessin; Norma Hartley and Dorothy Denton.

He is survived by three sisters, Betty Hartley, Petersburg; June Shields, Greenview; Helen Browning, Springfield.

Jim and Beverly Robertson of Swan Valley, formerly of Mason City, were his caregivers.

Hurley Funeral Home of Mason City handled his arrangements. He was buried Monday at Greenview Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Menard County Rescue.
