Hilda Jurgens

Hilda Bernice Jurgens, 86, of Middletown died Tuesday (July 29, 2003) at 8:45 a.m. at her home.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Holland and Barry Funeral Home in Lincoln.

Her funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Middletown United Methodist Church.

Burial will be in Irish Grove Cemetery, Middletown.

Mrs. Jurgens worked at Stetson's China Factory until it closed and then worked 18 years as a mental health technician at Lincoln Developmental Center.

She was born Aug. 2, 1916, at Middletown to William and Edith Sanders Wright. She married Herman Jurgens Jr. on May 29, 1940, at Greenview. He died March 5, 1989.

Survivors are two sons, Bill Jurgens of Ocala, Fla., and Gary Jurgens of Middletown; two daughters, Juanita Carlin of Middletown and Violet Davis of Athens; 12 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Harold, John and August Wright; four sisters, Opal Lane, Bertha Clemens, Chattie Wright and Neil Hamil; one grandchild; and one great-grandchild.


Ellis Smith

Ellis B. Smith, 77, of Mason City died Sunday (July 27, 2003) at 10:40 a.m. at his home.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Hurley Funeral Home, 603 E. Chestnut in Mason City.

The service at the funeral home will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, with the Rev. Bruce Bolin-Ghitalla officiating.

Burial will be in Auburn Cemetery, Auburn

Mr. Smith was most recently employed as assistant superintendent for the Peoria Park District, until he retired in 1986. He had previously worked in chicken and turkey production in Iowa.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran.

He was born Nov. 17, 1925, in Shell Rock, Iowa, to Leslie L. and Mary F. Grim Smith. He married Earleen Sells in 1944. He later married Lois Pilman, on April 9, 1985, in Springfield. She survives.

Other survivors are five sons, David (and Nancy) Smith of Auburn, Steve (and Ruth) Smith of Montgomery, Kevin (and Cathy) Smith of Springfield, and stepsons Douglas (and Tammy) Pilman of Peoria and Jerry (and Toni) Pilman of Brazil, Ind.; four daughters, Maureen (and Paul) Jackson of Springfield, Teresa (and Todd) Winings of Roseville, Calif., Cheryl (and Pete) Seiser of Webster City, Iowa, and stepdaughter Lois (and Rick) Descamps of Washington; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, who died Nov. 27, 1988; one daughter, Pam Kerr; one stepson, Charles Pilman; two grandsons, Ricky Seiser and Gary Spoor; and one brother.

He was a member of American Legion and AMVETS and was past president of the Belmond, Iowa, Lions Club.

He worked in a chicken hatchery in Shell Rock, Iowa, for four years and then did turkey service work as a troubleshooter for Nutrena Feeds turkey producers. In 1954 he began managing a turkey hatchery in New Haven, Iowa. In 1958 he built his own hatchery and farm in Belmond, Iowa, where he raised turkeys from the hatching stage to the dressing stage.

Memorial contributions may be made to Mason City United Methodist Church or Hospice Care of Illinois.

 

Maudine Horst

Maudine W. Horst, 89, of Mason City died Tuesday (July 29, 2003) at 7:15 a.m. at Mason City Area Nursing Home.

Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Hurley Funeral Home, 603 E. Chestnut in Mason City.

A graveside service will follow at 11 a.m. in Mason City Cemetery, with Nash Shawgo officiating.

Mrs. Horst was a homemaker and was employed at Lincoln Garment Factory.

She was born Sept. 1, 1913, in Caledonia, Miss., to Newman and Bessie Russell Wood. She married Howard Horst on July 27, 1941, in Columbus, Miss. He died Feb. 9, 1966.

Survivors are one son, Clifford John (and Laveda) Horst of Mason City; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-granddaughter.

She was also preceded in death by three brothers.

She was a member of the Flint Hill Methodist Church in Caledonia, Miss.

Sarah 'Suzie' Brown

Sarah "Suzie" Louise Brown, 78, of Lincoln died Sunday (July 27, 2003) at 9:45 p.m. at Vonderlieth Living Center in Mount Pulaski.

Her funeral was Wednesday morning at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln, with the Rev. Carroll Richards officiating. Visitation was on Tuesday at the funeral home.

Burial was in Harmony Cemetery, Beason.

Mrs. Brown was a dietary worker at Lincoln Developmental Center before she retired.

She was born July 3, 1925, in Curby, Ind., to Clarence E. and Pearl Irene Webster Landers.

She married Marvin F. Brown on April 1, 1949, in Springfield, and he died July 3, 1984. She had previously married Harold M. Reynolds, on Feb. 27, 1941, and he preceded her in death.

Survivors are one son, Gus (and Becky) Franklin Brown of Lincoln; one daughter, Lucky Connie Lee Eichner of Lincoln; five grandsons, Gary Clayton Downey, Evan Jay Downey, Jeremy Brown, Jason Brown and Jonathon Brown; one granddaughter, Gina Marie Brown; two great-grandsons, Ethan James Downey and Steven Brown; one great-granddaughter, Kendra Leigh Downey; and one sister, Alice M. Thornton of Lincoln.

She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Walter P. Landers and James L. Landers, and one sister, Mary L. Jones.

She was a member of First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Lincoln, Cumberland Presbyterian Women, the Mary and Martha class, American Legion Auxiliary 263 and the foster grandparent program.

Memorials may be made to First Cumberland Presbyterian Church of Lincoln.
