John Bates Jr.
John N. Bates Jr., 70, of Mount
Pulaski died Monday (Nov. 3, 2003) at 5:45 p.m. at his home.
His funeral was Thursday
morning at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader in Mount Pulaski, with
Marvin Flowers and John Robertson officiating. Visitation was on
Wednesday at the funeral home.
Burial is in Steenbergen
Cemetery, Mount Pulaski.
Mr. Bates was sewer
superintendent from 1989 to 1997, mayor of Mount Pulaski from 1997
to 2001, a Mount Pulaski alderman from 1977 to 1981 and from 2001 to
2003, and a member of the Mount Pulaski Phoenix Fire Department for
27 years, including five years as assistant fire chief.
He was born April 28, 1933, in
Mount Pulaski Township to John N. and Cora Tidball Bates Sr. He
married Estella Mae Grandfield in Clinton on Oct. 30, 1950. She died
June 8, 1994. He married Helen Park in Mount Pulaski on Dec. 8,
1995. She survives.
Other survivors are three sons,
Roger (and Karen) Bates of Mount Pulaski, Thomas (and Linda) Bates
of Lincoln, Randall (and Jo Ann) Bates of Mount Pulaski; a
stepdaughter, Carol Voyles of Lansing, Kan.; a stepson, Robert Moore
of Decatur; six grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren; one
great-grandchild; and four sisters, Dorothy (and Bill) Johnson of
Lincoln, Helen Owens of Lincoln, Mary (and Phil) Rodriguez of Denham
Springs, La., and Eloise (and Ray) Taylor of Decatur.
He was also preceded in death
by two brothers and one sister.
He was a member of St. John’s
Lutheran Church in Mount Pulaski.

Helen Haberland
Helen L. Haberland, 84, formerly of San
Jose, died Monday (Nov. 3, 2003) at 12:50 a.m. at Maple Ridge Care
Centre in Lincoln.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m.
Thursday and her funeral at 11 a.m. Friday, both at Hurley Funeral
Home in San Jose.
Burial will be in Green Hill Cemetery,
rural San Jose.
Mrs. Haberland was a homemaker.
She was born Dec. 23, 1918, in
Blackwell, Okla., to James and Leota Eudaily. She married Clarence
"Tony" Haberland on April 2, 1938, in Iowa. He died April 1, 1997.
Survivors are one son, Tony (and
Valorie) Haberland of Mountain Home, Idaho; one daughter, Lela (and
David) Wahl of Springfield; 12 grandchildren; 17
great-grandchildren; two brothers, Clarence "Toots" Eudaily of
Montana and Paul "Snowball" Eudaily of San Jose; and two sisters,
Melba Langenbahn of San Jose and Barbara Fanders of Pekin.
She was also preceded in death by one
brother, one sister and one son, Terry Haberland.
She was a member of San Jose United
Methodist Church.
Memorial
contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Goodgion
Carol Jean Gragg
Goodgion, 72, of Lincoln died Sunday (Nov. 2, 2003) at 7:10 a.m. at
the Christian Village.
She was cremated.
A memorial service
will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at Lincoln Christian Church, with Tom
Gerdts officiating.
Inurnment will be at
a later date.
Arrangements are
being handled by Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home of Lincoln.
Mrs. Goodgion was an
accounting clerk at Economy Fire and Casualty Co. in Lincoln before
she retired. She was formerly employed by INA Insurance Co. in
Richmond, Ind.; Gragg's Hatchery in Cambridge City, Ind.; and as
supervisor of sewing at Paul Casket Co. in Cambridge City, Ind.
She was born July 16,
1931, in Henry County, Mo., to Lawrence A. and E. Lorene George
Gragg. She married Carl Goodgion on Sept. 8, 1957, in Richmond, Ind.
He died Sept. 6, 1967.
Survivors are five
daughters, Gail (and Allen) King of Lincoln, Pamela (and James)
Rogers of Dayton, Ohio, Toni (and David) Shank of Pershing, Ind.,
Melanie Goodgion of Lincoln and Mitzi Goodgion of Dayton, Ohio; 12
grandchildren; and two brothers, Lawrence "Bud" Burton Gragg of
Ellenton, Fla., and Roland "R.J." Gragg of Littleton, Colo.
She was a member of
Lincoln Christian Church.
Memorials may be made to the Christian
Village or Alzheimer's Association.
