[OCT. 10, 2003]  SPRINGFIELD -- Logan County Title Company of Lincoln is being honored by the Illinois State Historical Society as a centennial business. The local company is one of 60 businesses and other organizations that turned at least 100 this year. The Centennial awards will be presented at a banquet Oct. 10 at the Palmer House Hilton in Chicago. In addition, Studs Terkel will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra will receive an Artistic Achievement Award.

Joan Parker, president of Logan County Title Company, along with Logan County historian Nancy Gehlbach and her husband, Gerald, will attend the banquet to accept the honor.

Each year the society honors those companies that have operated continuously for a century or more in Illinois, enriching the state's economic heritage. Since the Centennial Award program began in 1984, it has honored more than 1,100 businesses.

Logan County Title Company was founded in 1903 by Lynn R. Parker to provide abstract and title work to residential, commercial and agricultural clients throughout Logan County.

Lynn R. Parker's grandson, D. Brewster, took over leadership of the title company in 1969 and served until his death in 1994, when his wife, Joan, became president. Joan's sons continue the family tradition, with Jonathan serving as vice president and Christopher as a director.

"Lynn and Brewster would be so humbled by this accolade, as are all of us," said Joan Parker. "It's a tremendous source of pride that we've been able to keep our business viable and growing for 100 years. And, in '04, we'll be on our way towards our bicentennial."

In addition to the Parkers, the staff of Logan County Title Company consists of Bonnie K. Young, secretary and treasurer; Karen Sampson, commitment and policy production; Jennifer Awe, title searcher and construction escrow; Beth Farmer, escrow closing; and Barb Peddicord, receptionist. Former Lincoln businessman Jim Orr also conducts marketing and customer service activities on a consulting basis with Logan County Title customers.

"Through books such as "Division Street" and "Working," Studs Terkel has established himself as a premier oral historian of the 20th century," said Tom Teague, executive director of the society. "And through tens of thousands of performances, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra has established itself as a premier cultural institution." An ensemble from the CSO will play at the Oct. 10 banquet.
