William 'Bud' Sparling

William "Bud" Sparling, 79, of Lincoln died Thursday (Sept. 25, 2003) at 8:30 a.m. at his home.

Visitation and recitation of the rosary were at Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln on Friday.

His funeral will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Holy Family Catholic Church, with Father Thomas Taylor officiating.

Burial, with military rites, will be in Holy Cross Cemetery, Lincoln.

Mr. Sparling retired in 1988 after 34 years as advertising manager for the Lincoln Courier.

He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II, from 1943 to 1946.

He was born Sept. 9, 1924, at Olney. He married Betty Pokorski on June 2, 1958, in Lincoln.

Survivors are his wife; two daughters, Sherry (and Richard) Wright of Monticello and Nancy (and Raul) Rodriquez of Palatine; three grandchildren; three sisters, Dorothea Schmidt of Lincoln, Rosalyn Widner of Rantoul and Janice Sparling of Watseka; and four brothers, Wilmer R. Birk of Lincoln, Bernard Birk of Houston, Texas, Donald Sparling of Watseka and Martin Sparling of Arkansas.

He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Sparling; his mother, Jessie Dufrain Sparling Birk; and his stepfather, Wilmer L. Birk.

He was a member of Holy Family Church of Lincoln.

Memorials may be made to Wayne J. Schall Hospice or Carroll Catholic School.

Janice Altman

Janice L. Altman, 75, of Lawndale died Friday (Sept. 26, 2003) at 4:07 a.m. at Hopedale Hospital.

Mrs. Altman was cremated. There will be no visitation or services.

Fricke-Calvert-Schrader Funeral Home in Lincoln handled arrangements.

Mrs. Altman was a retired beautician.

She was born Feb. 17, 1928, in Lawndale to Raymond and Lillian Naugle Kendrick. She married William Altman.

Survivors are her husband, of Lawndale; one daughter, Terry Altman of Lawndale; and one brother, Wayne Kendrick of Lawndale.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

She was a member of Eminence Christian Church and a 35-year member of American Legion Auxiliary Post 263.
