Pharmacists' lawsuit 'jeopardizes women's health'

[APRIL 15, 2005]  CHICAGO -- Statement by Steve Trombley, president and chief executive officer of Planned Parenthood of the Chicago area, and Pam Sutherland, chief executive officer of the Illinois Planned Parenthood Council:

We strongly support Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich's emergency rule, which would require pharmacies to fill prescriptions for women without delay. And we strongly oppose the lawsuit filed by the American Center for Law and Justice.

This suit is yet another example of anti-choice hard-liners trying to politicize a health issue at the expense of women. Contraception is basic health care for women. Ninety-five percent of women in the U.S. use contraception at some point during their lifetimes, and they have the right to have their prescriptions filled without delay. This lawsuit is dangerous and jeopardizes women's health.

Gov. Blagojevich did the right thing to protect Illinois women by issuing an emergency rule to ensure that women receive their prescriptions without delay and we stand firmly behind the governor. Planned Parenthood will continue to work to provide equal access to medicine for all women.
