"This meeting is especially timely as producers start rebuilding
their cow herds," said Dave Seibert, U of I Extension animal systems
educator. "With the high value and cost of replacement heifers, it
is vitally important that these females remain a productive and
profitable part of the cow herd for many years." Areas covered at
the conference include mature cow weight, frame score, level of milk
production, structural soundness, disposition and udder quality.
Speakers and topics include Doug Parrett, U of I Extension beef
specialist, on "The Optimum Cow
-- What Criteria Must She Meet?"; Justin Sexten, U of I Extension
beef specialist, "Management of the Young Cow to Maximize
Reproductive Efficiency"; Dan Faulkner, U of I Extension beef
specialist, "Using By-Products to Improve Beef Cow Economic
Efficiency"; Alan Miller, coordinator of the Illinois IRM-SPA
program, "Measuring Cow-Calf Profitability and Financial
Efficiency"; and Seibert, "Functional Traits Affecting Cow
Efficiency."
Curt Rincker, president of the Illinois Beef Association, also
will make a presentation, "Maintain a Robust Beef Cow Herd in
Illinois."

Co-sponsoring the conference are the Illinois Beef Association,
the Illinois Soybean Check-off Board, the Illinois Corn Marketing
Board and the Sen. Simon E. Lantz Memorial Lecture Fund.
The Benton conference will be at the Franklin County Farm Bureau
auditorium. The Adams County Extension office will host the Quincy
conference.
Registration is $12, which covers a meal and a bound copy of the
proceedings. Deadline for registration is Aug. 18. Late and at-door
registration is $16.
