Trucker runs over woman lying on highway

[AUG. 31, 2005]  SPRINGFIELD -- Illinois State Police District 9 received a report at 3:41 a.m. Tuesday of a vehicle-pedestrian crash on Interstate 55 near Atlanta. The incident involved a white 2000 International semitrailer driven by Danny L. Alderson, 38, of Rollinsville, Colo., and a female pedestrian.

Alderson, who was accompanied by Teresa Alderson, 37, was driving the semitrailer northbound near Milepost 140 when he struck a female pedestrian lying in the right lane of the interstate. The driver was unable to avoid striking the pedestrian. He then pulled to the side of the interstate.

The female pedestrian was pronounced dead at the scene by the Logan County coroner. Her body was removed and transported to Memorial Medical Center in Springfield.

Alderson and his passenger were not injured.

The following agencies responded: Illinois State Police Zone 4 Investigations, Logan County Sheriff's Department, Atlanta Ambulance, Atlanta Fire Department, Lincoln-Logan Rural Paramedics and the Illinois Department of Transportation.

The weather was clear and the roadway was dry at the time of the accident. The incident remains under investigation by the Illinois State Police.
