It was the completion of four debates
and eight weeks of heavy campaigning between three strong contenders
for mayor of the city of Lincoln. The candidates -- Pat O'Neill,
currently serving District 5 on the county board and on numerous
civic committees; Dale Voyles, high school board and past county
board chairman, longtime public servant; and Beth Davis, current
mayor, Lincoln native, past county board member -- all filed for the
Republican candidacy.
Mayor Beth Davis won the nomination
with nearly 48 percent affirmation. Voyles was second, taking 30
percent of the 2,406 votes cast. And O'Neill claimed 22 percent.
There are a total of 11,484 registered
voters for the 22 precincts in Lincoln. Tuesday night's primary
yielded a 21 percent turnout, which is lower than recent elections.
Mayor Davis faces two contenders for
the April 5 election. Tom O'Donohue is running as an independent and
Jan Tabor is the Democratic candidate.
