[JAN. 11, 2005]  CHAMPAIGN -- The Balloon Association of Greater Illinois, in recognition of the generosity of the farming community in allowing hot-air balloons to launch from or land on their property, is sponsoring four $500 scholarships for students majoring in agriculture or an ag-related field.

The scholarships will be awarded on the basis of exceptional ability or financial need. Applicants must be a Farm Bureau member, spouse of member or member's child and live on a farm in one of the following counties: Adams, Champaign, DeWitt, Douglas, Ford, Iroquois, Logan, Macon, Marion, Mason, McDonough, McLean, Menard, Moultrie, Peoria, Piatt, Sangamon, Tazewell and Vermilion. In addition, an applicant must be a U.S. citizen, a high school graduate and be enrolled in or accepted by an accredited community college, college or university. Additional eligibility guidelines are outlined in the cover letter with the application form.

The Balloon Association of Greater Illinois is a nonprofit organization, incorporated in June 1990, to promote the sport of hot-air ballooning by bringing together pilots and potential crew. BAGI currently has approximately 190 members, including 65 pilots.
