SPRINGFIELD -- Amid the piles of paper plates and plastic
spoons in local stores, it's easy to envision a family picnic. To
make the vision a reality can require foresight and flexibility,
with fun the final result. Illinois state parks, with plentiful
picnic tables, pavilions, and shade trees, are ideal destinations
for any family. |
"The family picnic doesn't have to be an elaborate event; just
taking the family to the park for a simple lunch provides fodder for
valued family memories," said Joel Brusnvold, director of the
Illinois Department of Natural Resources. "It's not the extravagance
of a big vacation that makes an impression on kids -- it's the
chance to spend quality time with the people they love, away from
distractions." Many Illinois state parks feature developed picnic
areas, with tables and grills. Most often, these are located near
toilets. In some cases, drinking water is also accessible. Many
parks also feature playground equipment, as well as access to
fishing, boating and hiking.

General rules that can enhance the
picnicking experience:
- If possible, make reservations ahead of time, especially for
pavilions.
- If using charcoal, make sure the coals are completely
extinguished before disposing of them.
- Follow all alcohol rules at the site.
- Be respectful of other campers.
- Keep pets on a leash at all times.
- Pick up all litter, including cigarette butts.
- When packing for the picnic, include bug spray and sunscreen.
"Because admission to Illinois state parks is free, a visit can
be an economical outing that kids remember forever," said Tony
Mayville, director of land management for the Department of Natural
Resources. "Illinois state parks are one of the greatest
entertainment values you'll find anywhere."
